Hello Roomies!
My name is Anna, my partner and I rehomed a Staffy yesterday, he is six months (apparently) and he was named Jasper, which we have changed to Jango (not to be confused with Django the Italian or Jamie Foxxs character, he was apparently named after Jango Fett, yes my partner is a Star Wars fan and to easily change a dogs name we have been told to use a name that starts with the same initial, Jango it was haha)
He is a lovely trusting dog, within a few hours he was looking for me when I left a room and wanting cuddles. Although, I have lived with a few dogs before, I have not however, owned a Staffy. He is very excitable, and has a thing about jumping up at people. He obviously wasn't trained much other than "paw" and the rest of it I can deal with, but the main thing right now is to sort out the jumping up.
We have been on a few walks, and he wants to lick everyone and say hello so much that he goes up on his back legs at them, of course being a Staff they think he is going to attack them and shy away from him, I even had one woman shield her children and freeze, to which out of shock seeing as he is still very small and I was at least a metre away I just blurted out "oh don't be ridiculous" I feel a bit bad for that now but I was just amazed how silly she was being. I have him on an extremely short leash as I am trying to harbour the pulling problem with an obedience lead and a harness. We checked with Pets At Home that the harness fit well etc and they told us that was a good way of doing it. Due to the lead, he doesn't get chance to jump on people, but he does go up and still try, I want to sort it quickly so as he doesnt get any complexes with people moving quickly away from him because they think he is being aggressive. He even does it to other dogs and dog owners have moved off really quickly thinking he will hurt them, when all he wants to do is play. We are all going to go to some training classes at a nearby park with him, but if anyone has any suggestions (being that you are all Staffy owners specifically yourselves) I am all ears, so please, come at me!
If I am posting in the wrong area for this issue just let me know. Thanks guys!

Welcome to the forum.
Loving the name Jango, I'm a big Star Wars nerd
You will meet ignorant people on walks a lot, don't let trhem annoy you, as long as you are being responsible you are on the right path. He is still settling in and will get better with time

Re: Hello Roomies!
Haha thank you It was going to be Boba but due to previously being Jasper just made more sense haha.
Yeah, I have been amazed at just how many people have acted that way. I have always been aware of a stigma with Staffys but didn't realise how much. A lot of people want to come and say hello but so many do everything they can to move away. I was also wondering, is it a good or bad thing to muzzle them? I don't really want to as he doesn't bite and again I don't want to give him a complex but some of my family have said I should due to his breed and peoples attitudes. If I should be please let me know Thanks again!

Re: Hello Roomies!
Unless he needs muzzled I wouldn't be doing it. I understand you are trying to be responsible though. Putting a muzzle on a dog that is doing nothing wrong and has no issues with aggression could create problems or make him nervous.
For the first while keep him on lead until he get used to you and your family. I'm a big believer in long leads and flexi leads. They have worked wonders for Logan.

Re: Hello Roomies!
Hello Jason, and thank you Mat (I think that is your name?) we have been reading up a lot and it has been a lot of mixed messages, we thought it may do more harm than good as he has no problems with biting so far and we didn't want to cause any issues. So thank you! We shall keep him muzzle free.
As I said we will go and see this trainer blokey soon, we have the lead he came with but although it was longer it was too rough to hold with how strong Jango is. We have this short new one that is quite good. We also have a retractable and a long rope one so when we see trainer man I will ask him about what is good for where. The main thing is the jumping right now though. I can live with him not sitting when he is told etc as I am sure that can be fixed easily with some persistance but the jumping although he means it to be loving is causing a bit of an issue. He is wonderful though. We haven't stopped staring at him since we got him. Lovely markings and just so soppy!

Re: Hello Roomies!
Thank you When I figure out how to resize pictures for the avatar I shall show him off a bit.
Although the photos never bring out just how wonderful his colouring is. We almost called him Hobbes (Calvin and Hobbes) as it is like a golden orange stripe but, well brindle haha. Haven't seen it so bright before. Couldn't be happier. I don't think he had many toys before though. I asked the bloke who rehomed him if he had any and he said not really, so we got some and after a while he started to love chasing them but then has no idea what to do and just comes back for a cuddle haha
I have been having a little look around the forum and I just have to say thanks again, you all seem so helpful here, it's great!

Hey guys! Thank you! So how did you all sort out the wailing at night? I have used this pet corrector thing. Which so far has worked wonders. But if you have any better ideas, again bring them on :-D

Re: Hello Roomies!
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
Some people can over react badly at times which seems to be a curse sadly for us. He may have some separation anxiety there which you could work on gradually. Can you leave a radio on quietly for him at night? Or maybe move his bed so he can see you ?

Re: Hello Roomies!
Hello people :-D
He is quite good. When he heard we had stopped talking he quieteneddown and went to sleep. He is in the kitchen for now as the cats are upstairs and are a bit worried. The vet said not to rush them so for now that is the arrangment but we are having to move soon anyway so he will probably be in our room. The pet correcter seems to do the trick but I think I may use a radio and see if that works as I don't like him feeling alone.

Re: Hello Roomies!
Welcome Jango is gorgeous, looks like the same kind of brindle as Loki. For the jumping, you just turn around and completely ignore him, and then when he's stopped, give him lots of praise. Eventually he'll learn, but being young and also settling into his new home, it might take him a bit of time.

Re: Hello Roomies!
Hello my hubby and i rehomed our girl over 2 weeks ago the 1st time we took her down the park a lady pulled her dog away from us (hollie walks very well no pulling) and rudely said "My dog does not like staffs" we were gobsmaked really!!!! then a few minutes later we went to walk on the filed and another lady yanked this poor little jack russell up in the air by its collar because we walked past them, some people are so rude and it makes me cross, but other people are nice and come up to us and say how well behaved she is,

Re: Hello Roomies!
Thank you :-D we have had some weird looks, we had Jango and Alaska the Akita out for a walk togrther the other day so some looked worried but thankfully it has been mostly nice. Although did notice a couple cross the road the other day. He is the definition of soppy but some people are just too blind to notice.
Thank you for the advice also. We have been turning to our side and ignoring him then giving him praise. We have a problem with him pulling and jumping up at stranger now. He doesn't jump at us much and has learned mostly to sit which for three days is better than I could have hoped however when we go out for walks he is so amazed by everything that he forgets all his commands haha. he isn't too bothered about his ball or anything either. He is wonderful though. We are feeling more confodent each day that we made the right decision. :-D

Re: Hello Roomies!
Aw thanks guys! We let him off the lead for the fiest time last night. He had a fab time with another collie. Then today again with a boxer! Right now he is busy ripping the little tiny nodules off of one of his toys and strategically placing them around the room. Or at least I like to think it is. Most likely justspitting them out :-P he is also scared of the cat. Settling in well bless him.
