sniff crazy on his walk
Silva is around 6months now. While on walks he has really started getting obsessed about stopping and sniffing stuff. He has never been one to pull ahead but one minute he is walking nicely beside you and then all of a sudden your ripped backwards because he has stopped to sniff the grass. Is this normal and just a stage he is going through, young and exploring the world.
Add sniffing every five minutes with trying to get to every person he sees and it makes for a long and stressfull walk.
Will the sniffing improve and i should ride it out? Or should i try and correct him?

Re: sniff crazy on his walk
Let him sniff away, it's good for him to explore. He is starting to mature into an adult now and scents of other dogs etc mean a lot more to him.

Could you try a flexi lead then your arm won't get ripped out the socket

Re: sniff crazy on his walk
I used to think that Rocky had a hyperactive nose but it now seems it's all just normal. Just remember that while he is sniffing things he is using his brain and tiring himself out too. Mental activity can be as exhausting as physical activity so dont stop him from sniffing, he will sleep better for having done so later.

Re: sniff crazy on his walk
Zeus is the exact same, we used to take him on a flexi lead on his walks but found that he got too ahead of us and we couldnt keep an eye on any cars coming out of drives, etc, so we moved him onto a short lead. But he does the exact same, he'll be walking fine then randomly stop or go back because he smelt something, I've kind of got used to it now so just walk slow enough for him to smell everything

Yep, Tommy is the same. Sometimes I think he'll end up with a bad neck. He never looks ahead when walking!

Dog's can't look up, FACT.
Or is it cows can't walk down stairs? It's one of those two...

Re: sniff crazy on his walk
I'm pretty sure it's a teenage thing, because Loki started the same age too. He sniffed now and again but never pulled (except to meet dogs and people), whereas he hit six months and suddenly sniffing a leaf is more important than running around and playing

My Tank lives by his noes !
He explores loudly sniffing away !
I know for fact a lot of dog owners walk their bitches in heat - even more reason I can't let him off as he just followes scent !

Re: sniff crazy on his walk
I guess i'll just ride it out. I have switch to a harness for the time being to give his poor neck a rest, and i will be taking him to more obedience classes next week so that might steer him in the right direction aswell.
thanks for all the advice.

Re: sniff crazy on his walk
I have a problem with this too, Laska is mainly a ground sniffer so we're always stopping while Marley is mainly an air sniffer so he always wants to be on the move exploring. I'm stuck in the middle being pulled apart

Re: sniff crazy on his walk
Same with Bacchus. Dogs have such a fantastic sense of smell. All these scents are, to a dog, like us watching TV, they tell a dog so much about who's been there, their gender ovulation etc. It's a very detailed book which has to be read but a pain in the butt on a miserable day.
