Bruno is driving me mad kind of
Hi
Due to be ill with flu Bruno didn't walked for 9 days as first my daughter had it then my other half and I went down down with it, so Bruno didn't get to go for a walk, and now he is pulling more than usual, so much that today I took him for nearly a 4 mile walk and now have pull the muscles in my arm and shoulder. We have tried a halti, non pull harness and a ezy chest plate harness , someone said to try a choke chain but I'm not sure as he is now 2 years old.
Any advice ?
Anne

Does he always pull, or is it just because he hasn't been waked in a while?

I don't like choke/check chains personally as they have to be used correctly in order to work and are potetially quite harmful if used wrong.
Logan was a mad hard puller at a time. The only thing that worked for me is to stop dead still and correct him by telling him no very firmly but with no aggression/frustration. It doesn't seem to work unless you stop walking. Dogs seem to get fixated on one thing and can't hear you unless you snap him out of it.
A few of our members have had good success with those Canny Collars though.

I agree with the stopping. If either of mine decides to pull, I just stop dead and wait for them to look back at me. When they do, I get them back to heel, praise calmly and say 'steady' and move off. Eventually, they do it all on their own and I just stand there for a minute doing nothing. I particularly like this method as it means I'm not tempted to get frustrated, if I'm not doing anything, I can't accidentally escalate it.
Just be patient, and if it is an established problem, find a harness or headcollar that will help for the time being.

Re: Bruno is driving me mad kind of
i agree with the stop start, tyke was having a pull the other night and as im only small and he strong i use stop start. same as eris, back to heal sit praise and carry on. i like to walk with slack on the lead between my hand and tyke.
I would not recommend the choke chain as personally, but thats me. iv always used a harness as i felt like i had more control with tyke over a collar.

Re: Bruno is driving me mad kind of
The best thing I've found for pulling is stop and turn in the other direction each and every time. It takes forever to get anywhere but with patience and consistancy it does work.
That being said Suki still pulls like crazy at the begining of her walks or if she sees a familiar dog. We found a harness that really works well on her

With this my OH has no problem controlling her with one hand no matter how hard she pulls.

Thank you all response
Tara - He's always pulled but not this bad, thought he would calm down as he has been taken every day twice since i have been better and that's a week now, just don't know what has got into him.
Matt- I will look into the canny collars
Jstaff - i will look into that harness as well.
Thanks everyone
Anne

I personally recommend the Canny Collar as a new user for Tommy , 10 minutes of fidgeting trying to get the lopp of his nose and now he walks like an angel , doesn't lunge for other dogs and all in all the walking is very chilled , I'm chilled so he's chilled and a chilled dog is a good dog. Good luck with whatever you look into
