Question about taking puppy out... Empty Question about taking puppy out...

Post by kc Fri Feb 22 2013, 04:41

Hello

A few more questions Smile Smile

We will be getting our puppy at 8 weeks old (10 sleeps!!!) and he will of had his first vaccination then I believe his second vaccination in Australia would be at 10 weeks.

I have heard many conflicting things about taking the dogs out pre-2nd vaccination (In Australia to they can walk and go anywhere 5-7 days after the 2nd vaccination, think it differs in other places.) Some people say you should, other say you shouldn't due to the risk of parvo ect. I do not want to do anything to put the puppy at risk, and its only a 3 week wait so i can manage (at least he will be home Smile )

Does anyone have any opinions or experiences with this as i want to get him used to as many things as i can, and the sooner this starts, im assuming the easier it will be. I am just confused if you do take them out, where do u get them to go to the toilet if you cant put them down???

Thanks again!!

Casey

Question about taking puppy out... Empty Re: Question about taking puppy out...

Hi I have had this discussion many times and all the information I receive has always been that pups are not fully protected from parvo until after the third injection.. I strongly believe this to be true. I would never risk taking my girl out before then.. The Australian Veterinary Association states that 2 full vaccinations provide some protection but not complete protection against parvo.. And unfortunately we have many outbreaks here every year.. IMO I would rather be safe than sorry..

Also vacs in Aus are 4 weeks apart, so if he has his first shot at 8 weeks 2nd at 12wks 3rd at 16wks.. I know it is a frustrating wait and believe me it gets very tempting to take them for a walk to burn off that energy.

I found the best thing to do is enrol in a puppy class, there they get to socialise with other pups and humans, also remember if you have any friends or family with fully vaccinated dogs he is safe to play with them too. And some areas have puppy play dates, usually at the back of a vets etc where they have weekly play dates and the only pups allowed there are all vaccinated Big Grin I hope some of this helps Smile

Yay!! only 1o sleeps dance

Definitely wait until the right time. Mind you, you can take him places by carrying him so that he gets a bit more used to the great outdoors!

Yep, I'd wait until the right time but as Caryll said, I did hold Zeus and walk around my area just to get him used to it.

i was told by the vet that after the first injection i could let cass be with other dogs but ONLY if the dog he's with has had all the correct injections and is up to date with everything.

then again, what's a couple more weeks of waiting to be on the safe side? enjoy the puppy stage, it soon passes by.

No worries Big Grin It is very conflicting information on the net and it gets very confusing, I done a lot of research and I would say 90% said safe after 3rd shot.. I would rather be on the safe side Wink If you have chosen a Vet in your area that you think you may use pop in and ask them about puppy classes and play dates.. They usually can tell you what is available in your area..

9 sleeps left Big Grin

thanks everyone!!

This is what i thought however i just thought id ask on here as your all so helpful and i trust you all more than google!! I am going back to our previous vet who is about 40 mins from here but he was absolutely amazing with Jetta our late Staffy, who had multiple operations so I would prefer to drive and see him. We have a few vets nice and close that i know of also just in case.

Thanks again Big Grin
