For those who need educating
We have all met people who believe Staffordshire Bull Terriers are nasty little fighting dogs. In the area I live very few people have Staffy's and our old boy did a fab job of dispelling the Myths with his wonderful temperament.
Here is an extract from the Meryside staffordshire bull Terrier Breed Club...Maybe we should all carry this round with us
Temperament
Although individual differences in personality exist, common traits exist throughout the Staffords. Due to its breeding, the modern dog is known for its character of indomitable courage, high intelligence, and tenacity. This, coupled with its affection for its friends, its off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability, make it a foremost all-purpose dog. It has been said that "No breed is more loving with its family" It is the only breed to have the words 'totally reliable' in its breed standard. Furthermore, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is one of only two breeds from over 190 recognized by the UK Kennel Club to have a mention of the breed's suitability with children.

Perhaps we all should get T-shirts made with that printed on them We could wear them whenever we walk our dogs..

Unfortunately not all Staffies (or any other breed of dog) to that matter have wonderful temperaments. You only have to read on this forum the number of people asking for advice on their Staffies that become unsociable after puppyhood, Its in their genes. Posing the question ' Are pedigree KC registered dogs more temperamentally sound than the back yard breeders dogs? The latter usually breed for the money and not the betterment of the breed.

Re: For those who need educating
When I was talking about temperament I meant with people ...sorry that probably came across wrong because of the way I worded it
I know many staffy's are not dog friendly and in fact when breeding you are looking for a dog that is ' fit for purpose' i.e a dog that is physically capable of fighting.....not that any of us want a dog like that, it's a nuisance and the main drawback of the breed IMO...it is something we all accept though.
Our Taz was naughty with other dogs, despite being very well socialised as a puppy...we just made sure we were responsible and didn't let him off when other dogs were around.
I suppose I just get frustrated that sometimes the fact that Staffy's naturally have an infinity with children and are ultra friendly by nature has been forgotten by a lot of the general public.I suspect because of those bad owners and the press

Re: For those who need educating
Loki didn't inherit the suitability with children part of his temperament. He really didn't but that's a great thing to read if only more people could see that. What's the other breed the KC mentions that are good with kids?

As novice staffy servant, I knew about their reputation with children, but had never seen it in print, so thanks racamoe. As I said previously, I now carry a copy of this in my wallet to preach to the non-believers.
BTW I doubt if the other breed is The Golden Retriever. I seem to remember reading somewhere that they are in the Top Ten for aggression but this might include dog aggression.
