Children biters
A stall-holder at one of our local markets has a beautiful GSD bitch which my wife has been acquainted with since it was a small puppy. Having had GSDs in the past we are huge fans of the breed and my wife always stops and makes a fuss of her. The dog is usually accompanied by the stallholder but today it was his wife. While interacting with the dog my wife mentioned that we have a 6 mth old staff. The woman's immediate reaction was, " I wouldn't have one of those, they bite kids"
My wife politely pointed out that our dog, in common with the breed in general, adores children. Perhaps she should have added "but he couldn't eat more than one".
I find this particularly annoying as I can remember a time when the GSD had this reputation.
As previously stated, I am a big fan of the GSD but I suspect that research would show that more children have been bitten by GSDs than staffs.
Does anyone know of any statistics on dog attacks on children by breed??

Can't put my fingers on one right now, but I'm sure we had one on here fairly recently that showed Labradors to be well up near the top of child-biters!

Doesn't seem to exist or at least in the last 20 years or so. Only stats I've seen are breed related but to all incidents in general not differentiating between dog on dog , dog on person etc

Re: Children biters
There is a list by breed def out there I'm on my rubbish phone or I'd have a search. If memory serves dogs like JRT's and dachshund's were the highest.
In my opinion breed does have a part to play but not entirely. I deal with a farmer who has a border collie and it is by far the most aggressive dog I've ever seen. So much so that he has a HUGE sign at the entrance in red saying "do not leave your vehicle, dog will attack". It actually attacked my car once.

i've seen a list of dogs that bite kids and labradors are on top of it, i suppose being soft mouthed it does'nt do the damage a staffy would, so this would be swept under the carpet as a "nip"

That's the one I have seen too. Mostly working dog breeds as expected. Though 9/10 of those incidents are most likely to do with the dog not being sufficiently exercised.

Re: Children biters
If the lady in question had seen the cuddles I was getting last night I think she might have changed her mind.
He's my first staff and stubborn and exasperating at times but I have NEVER had such an affectionate wee dog.
People always know someone, who knew someone, who's great grandfather twice removed knew someone who was bitten by some dog or another.

Agree!
When I was at the vets with Effie to get her 2nd jab and microchip, I had a canny discussion with the vet about SBT Reputation they so call have...
She said that you would be more likely to get bitten by a Labrador or spaniel than a Stafford!
Me and my partner don't have kids, but Effie just loves everyone very friendly!

I'm sure she gets lots of attention too, she's adorable.
Bacchus has converted a few people already. Everyone who walks their dogs in the meadow knows him because of his gregarious nature and unusual markings.

Re: Children biters
In none of the polls I've checked out has the staff even figured in the top 10 for aggression.
