Neutering......male or female.

Just wondering from the vast amount of knowledge on the forum if anyone can help settle a little difference of opinion between myself and my husband.

Logan will be getting neutered soon. This is so we can introduce a female staff into our house with no possibility of an accidental mating. My husband has been told by his mate not to get him 'done' but to get the female done instead. This is because apparently 'it will affect Logans growth and his 'emotions' and will change his mind' and its easier for the female to be neutered.

Just wondering if there is any truth to this. Personally, Logan will be getting 'done' and so will the female. I am not a breeder so dont want a whole litter of pups.

Not a clue about the male/female mating thing, great your still going have him/them both neutered though.

it was always the plan to get him 'done'. Especially now we now he has hydrocephalus too. We cant stud him out even if we wanted to. It'd be too irresponsible.
And if ever the potential new puppy escapes or runs off etc, i know there will no chance of an unwanted litter.

Great opinion of it. Its a very touchy subject, and always has its pros and cons disscused.

Not too sure though on 2 living together, my 2 have both been 'done' and where girls so not a clue!

I agree, its a very personal subjuct. Each to their own, but my dogs will be neutered.(as my previous dogs were too)

I have read that having a male done can effect his growth as the growth hormones are to do with testosterone,or something along those lines,but it's up to you,you could wait untill he has stopped growing and then get him chopped?

I would get them both done. I want to get a bitch when charlie is a little older and they well both be getting done.

Thats what we are doing too. Just waiting until Logan is a little older. But i've already been looking and cant help myself.........

I'm Seriously falling for american bulldogs too. Haven't told my husband yet that we're probably gonna end up with 3 dogs! Only thing is, that'll screw up my one of each sex plan!

my husband met an AmStaff today at work so i said to tell his mate we'll dog sit anytime!!!

And dont worry about the 1 of each sex thing, you'll have to even it out some how......

2 of each sex sounds good to me! A male and female staff and a male and female american bulldog! My hubby is gonna kill me......

I'd wait till Logan's about 1 year old & then get him done. I'd do the same with any bitch pup you get (Yes, that's right, folks, I'm recommending neutering lol!). Although a dog's size & shape is mapped out in his genes, it only realises its full potential with the release of testosterone as the pup matures (ie nature v. nurture). Same with a bitch - if she's allowed one season she will look & act more feminine.

If you're really going to argue about which one gets done though, I'd sugest the bitch as then there can be absolutely no chance of her having a pregnancy even if she escapes.

Mind you, having said that, the operation for neutering a dog is cheaper & less involved than a bitch.

Not sure if it's true............but I know it's a scientific fact that it's allot easier in humans if the female gets done

Good advise Caryll I wouldnt neuter a dog though but thats me unless for medical reasons
