Post by mandiej Sat Jan 19 2013, 19:59

Hi, on Wednesday we rescued a two year old male staffie from some friends as they were unable to keep him sue to personal circumstances. We are now his third owner. We previously owned a rescue staff who we lost a year and a half ago.

He has settled well, however if anyone leaves the room he will follow, but if you go out the house even for a second he will cry. Even if there are still people with him. We left him alone for the first time the other day and you could hear him crying, what can I do to ensure that he is not worried to be left alone.

Many thanks
Mandie

Hello and welcome from me and the kids Big Grin

One of the best things is not to make a fuss and just leave , break him in gently to being totally alone, building up the time gradually , leave him a nice treat like a frozen Kong to occupy him

Hi & welcome to the forum >Big Grin<

Like already said start off really small steps like by being in another room then build up the time. Then maybe go out to put the bins out and come back in. Hopefully with time he will settle in more and start to realise he isn't getting left and he has now got his forever home

Hi Mandie and welcome.

You have done very well in rescuing this Staff good job

I have no experience of rehoming older dogs, having always had my dogs from puppies, but it sounds to me as though this dog is a bit confused at the moment. I would bet that he will settle down in time when he realises you are not abandoning him forever! Dave and Mike's advice above is excellent - baby steps!

Do keep in touch

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.

You could try leaving a radio on quietly for him when you go out.
