Re: Off to the vet in the morning!!
You know you should wait until 3rd jabs Sorry to be a downer but in Aus the jabs are different to the UK.. They are not fully protected until a week after the 3rd needles..

Re: Off to the vet in the morning!!
Talk about confusing the first vet (who did his initial jab before we got him) said he was not due for his second till 12 weeks. The vet I rang said 4 weeks after his first which is now...ARGH!!!

Re: Off to the vet in the morning!!
I'm sorry.. Believe me I know your pain.. If you look back on my old posts you will see how much I whined about it.. But unfortunately 16weeks is the earliest a pup is protected here.. We vaccinate against different things that they don't have in UK and vice versa.. 8-10weeks is first shot 12-14wks 2nd then 16-18wks is the 3rd.. As hard as it is it is better than feeling the pain if they do contract anything..
As for socialisation, Steff was finally let free at 18wks old and we go to the off lead park almost daily and she is very well socialised No problems what so ever.. So don't worry about that. Just take him out in your arms as often as possible to get used to everything, and remember if you KNOW another dog is fully vaccinated he can have play dates with them As long as you are SURE they are up to date on their shots..

Re: Off to the vet in the morning!!
We're similar to Aus with our jabs, but we are allowed to start attending puppy classes after the 2nd jab. Vinny had his 2nd jab a month ago but school has been closed for the holidays, so we arranged plenty of play dates for him with "safe" mates in "safe" areas. They're all older than him so it will be interesting to see how he reacts to puppies in class on Saturday!
I agree, take him out in your arms often - we took Vinny with on Roxy's walks, but carried him; took him for car rides; to the store etc. and have made sure he has been touched by everyone from little kids to oldies

Re: Off to the vet in the morning!!
When you go to the Vet ask them bout puppy schools or socials.. They usually have get togethers with pups that are of a similar age and not yet fully immunised but hd their 1st jabs Good luck it is a hard few weeks but well worth the wait..

Re: Off to the vet in the morning!!
He will still have plenty of time to socialize. We got Suki when she was about 18 weeks and she is very good with other dogs. Just takes an effort to let them play with other dogs everyday and know what to look for in body language

I wouldn't worry about that...it'll be a brand new world for him to explore, he'll be VERY interested in meeting people and dogs, trust me

Re: Off to the vet in the morning!!
Thanks ladies! Everything I read makes it sound like a pup not socialised by 16 weeks is a lost cause :/ When they use language like "small window of opportunity" as a first time dog owner it is hard not to worry
glad to have some experienced people to talk to about it with

That really annoys me. Yes, there's a 'window' when it's more conducive to socialise your pup, but that's not the only time! you can socialise any age of dog & have tremendous success as long as it's done properly. The main thing is to make sure you take him out for short periods, held securely in your arms, to let him know that there are loads of scary things out there that he needn't be worried about cause you're there!
Then, when he's had his jabs, you can introduce him to other dogs over the park etc.

If the 2nd jabs ave been administered then your dog can go out immediately.

Re: Off to the vet in the morning!!
I'm sorry but if your vet told you that you need a new vet.. These are the protocols set out by officials, as you can see it is a legit govt. doc..

Take note of this..
Because the decline in the level of MDA varies between animals, three initial vaccinations are generally recommended, timed to ensure that the animal is fully protected.

Re: Off to the vet in the morning!!
As I am new to all of this I know your frustration! Honey is still young and we are also waiting for her to get her third injection so we can take her out. We enrolled in puppy preschool which is great for socialisation and is in a safe, sanitized and controlled environment. I strongly encourage you to look into it!
I have spoken to a few vets in my area and asked if other dogs that are fully vaccinated can come over to our home to play and the answer from all three was no As apparently all though the other dogs are immunized they could still be carriers of parvo or have picked up germs from their walks etc that can be passed on from them to your pup and sadly pups do not have the full immunity against such viruses. I was told to not do it as its just not worth it. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this is the info I have been given and have taken it on board am awaiting the time for my little lady to get out and about!

The only other vet in our area only does 2 vaccinations one at 6-8 weeks and another at 12 weeks. He was the one that did his initial jabs. I went with this new vet to get the 3 vaccinations. We must have dud vets around here
