Alcohol kills 22,000 people a year in the UK , my own big Brother was one of them he died 7 years ago aged just 52 , i saw what the effects of Alcohol did to him and it was shocking , this Grammar School educated mental health nurse was seeing huge white Lions in his front Garden . he was once picked up by the police he told them he was fighting serpents in the middle of the road .
He lost his marriage his home and his job then his life, we got him sectioned twice but on his release he was straight back on the bottle mainly vodka there was no stopping him, i pity anyone who has to wittness what i saw my Brother go through , deepest sympathy to the Lads Family Steve .

i was talking to my mate today we dont know why no one stop it?
where was he getting the money from to drink so many can and so on?
i know i would be breaking the law if had a family who was drinking himself to death i would lock them in a room till they didn't want it anymore yes i may get lock up for it but at least i can go in side knowing i did try to help if they did carry on drinking or using drug and end up killing them self, i dont know how these people who dont do anything live with them selfs

Steve, it's terrible and tragic and I know you are grieving.
I know a natural reaction is to ask why did no-one stop it and I would have done this or that to force him to stop.
The fact is that no one CAN stop someone else from drinking excessively, the driving force has to come from HIMSELF otherwise nothing will work - they will find ways.
Try not to blame other people for your friend's death, the ultimate responsibility was with him himself.

have you seen the baseball diaries i would do the same with any family member of my. lock them up till they didn't want the beers or drugs again
Re: a lad i used to hang around with
No, I have no idea what the baseball diaries are/is. Is it a film?
I'm sorry to say that this problem, whether drinks or drugs, is not as simple as locking the addict up. I am only speaking from experience I'm afraid, not a film.

if you lock someone up long enough then you can work on the rest.
Re: a lad i used to hang around with
You can dry someone out, and they will appear to be over it. But the addiction is still there, and unless they want to stop, they'll go straight back on it again.
And don't forget that once someone's a recovering addict, they can never touch alcohol again - if they do, they'll instantly be back on the drink again.

Re: a lad i used to hang around with
like i said i could try to do something and get lock up for then do nothing all like his mum and family did
Re: a lad i used to hang around with
Steve, I know from my time on this forum that you are a very caring person, and I only wish it could be as simple as you seem to think.
It is VERY difficult living with an alcoholic and/or a drug addict and it may look to outsiders that the family are doing "nothing" but unless you are there 24/7 you can't know for definite.
I am sure they are grieving just as much as you, possibly even more. Please don't judge them, you don't know what has been going on behind closed doors.

Re: a lad i used to hang around with
i would just lock them up and do nothing, i have been around drunk and druggy nearly most of my life i know there is a reason why people turn to drug or beer, i have told people i love that if i very decide to do anything of the 2 to lock me up till, because you see people going rehab and doing nothing at all
Re: a lad i used to hang around with
Well as i said Steve my Brother was sectioned twice and that means locked up, we pleaded with him for his kids sake to stop drinking but to no avail , Drink creates a demon in their heads and unless they can shake that Demon off then nothing works , my Brother once told me he couldn't walk past an shop that sold booze because he had to have it , he admitted to me he would steal it if he had no money because the Demons in his head told him to do it , it is a very complex illness and it goes very deep , we tried to let him hit the floor hoping he would get back up Sadly he never did , the only people who can help them is themselves im afraid .

Re: a lad i used to hang around with
Mick I am SO sorry about your brother.
Steve, please listen to Mick if you are not going to listen to me. But one last thing, you say "you see people going rehab and doing nothing at all " and that is the key - they go to rehab and are "locked up" until they are clean, but unless they REALLY, REALLY want to conquer their demon then rehab (locking up) won't help at all, they'll just return to their demon. It is a first step - the rest is up to them.
Grieve for your friend of course, but please don't blame his family.
I'm going to bow out of this one now as I have said all I can, and I don't want the thread to be binned for "going round in circles".

A sad thread, indeed.
Condolences to anyone affected by drink and drugs - far more common than most think.
