Training for a show Empty Training for a show

Hi,

I have just recently found out that there is a dog show coming to Dubai in which we can enter our dog Brutus. The dog show is quite relaxed and more of an exhibition rather than a competitive show. However there will be a couple of judges over who regular judge in the UK and I would like to have their opinion of our pup. In terms of training him for the event, can anyone pass on some good links of what he is to, and not to do? What we are to teach him and the best methods? I have looked over the forum, but I cant find the links I saw the other day.

We have until the second weekend in Feb to have him trained to a degree. Whilst I don't expect him to be an outstanding performer in the ring, he does pick things up very quickly.

Thanks for your advice in adnvance.

Hi Josh have you tried here
https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/f114-staffordshire-bull-terrier-showing-questions

The only other things i could think of is the basic sit stay etc commands using treats as a reward

Just focus on the basic obienance commands that will be expected to be performed in the show and make sure he can do them with noise and distractions around.

Ah perfect. Thanks for the link. Must be suffering from Sunday-itis.

He has all the basic commands down pat. Sit, stay, down, bow, rollover, play dead, shake, hi-5. He is good off his lead when we are in a secure area and comes when called. Also, he is good with other dogs, if not a little over excited and just wants to play. Some times makes a few other dog owners a little nervous.

We only have entered Suki in one fun show. Her commands are pretty good but one of the areas judged was the trick portion. I told her to sit and lwait while I laid a treat on the ground. She heard a little girl crying and ran off to console her. Needless to say we lost this portion.

NOT SIT!!!! Big Grin

Sorry, but if it's a conformation show then sit is out of the question! Every time you stop your dog should stand still, & preferably look either straight ahead, or up at you (provided you are standing in front of him & facing him). He must also be able to trot around the ring on a loose lead without jumping or running.

Again, if it's a conformation show, you need to teach your dog that it's ok for a stranger to touch him all over, and look at his teeth (some judges will pull the lips up themselves, some will ask you to do it for them). For the movement, you have three basic patterns;
1. Straight line away from the judge, then about turn & straight back;
2. Triangle - away from the judge diagonally (normally to the right) to the corner of the ring, then left turn along the edge of the ring & left turn again, diagonally back to the judge;
3. Circle away from the judge & around the ring (usually only used for pastoral breeds, so unlikely to be for a stafford).

The thing you will have to remember with the triangle is always keep your dog on the judge's side of you so that he has a good view of your dog's movement at all times.

Anything else you need to know, just ask! Big Grin

Thanks for the info Caryll. Really helpful and appreciated.

The standing still when we stop may be a bit tricky for us to get him to do. We had taught him to sit when we stop so that people wouldn't be overly wary of him. Also, whenever we walk him and we stop, he sits automatically and watches us before carrying on. Makes it a bit easier when crossing a road and the crazy drivers we have here.

I guess thats the difference between buying for a pet and for show, the training regime.

You just need to do different commands. Whenever you stop in the show ring, tell him to stay just before you stop - just one pace before is fine.
