Re: JUST BUMPED INTO ON OF THE PUPS ON A WALK
Perhaps calling the pup it may have another scent onto of the original scent but they would smell the same to each other from their rear glands etc. I only have to take Taz for a ten minute run while my mum walks Cassie and Blondy on our way back Cassie always reckonising him she goes crazy barks and dashing for him.

They don't just forget their family, that bond is always there. I'm sure dakota knew exactly who her pup was, why she was barking im not sure! My girl remembers all 3 of her puppys even if she sees them from afar. She can be a little DA with dogs she doesn't know but when she sees her babies its all tail-wagging and licks.
They maintain a bond even if they don't see one another much. For example the dog-puppy we had (shadow) hardly ever sees his mum and two sisters but when they do they all slot back into their pack hierarchy and behave like they were never apart.
Not sure why dakota was barking though, was it an aggressive bark or just a noisy bark? If tail was wagging like mad she probably just wanted to see and play with puppy!

Re: JUST BUMPED INTO ON OF THE PUPS ON A WALK
It sounds like it was an excited barking. Dogs do forget their parents/siblings/pups in time if they don't see each other, but they're still very young & there may still be some memory of her pups there.
