That poor nurse, how bad she must of felt. I wish the press as a collective would have the decency to stop thinking they are allowed to do/say what they like

oh my good god. That is so awful.
RIP nurse lady. I don't think that answering a phone call is cause for suspension! She made an error giving out details but to be honest what could she have told them that the press dont already know? "today she was sick, she did a poo. she drank some oj and ate a digestive then was sick again"

too right!! this "freedom of the press" thing stopped a long time ago when the biggest stories became about bullying and causing serious upset to people!! I want to hear NEWS not watch the press harrass someone until they kill themselves. to me they are no better than school bullies who text, online and phone bully people!

Just watchin it on the news Poor lady and her 2 poor kids The DJ's have been sacked for the prank, they were pulled off air immediately, I know it dosen't change the tragedy or make it any better for her family but it is a wake up call to all pranksters, sometimes it can go horribly wrong

Well I'm going to say something controversial and sorry if I offend.
Though I feel sorry for this lady and how it has ended up then I can't help feel that she must have been teetering on the brink for something like this to set her off. This prank was only a prank and no worse than the stuff we see on tv shows like just for laughs etc etc, and it has been so high profile because of who it was. These 2 people could never had predicted the consequences of what was essentially having a laugh and I don't think it's fair TBH they just were unlucky with a 1 in a 1000 outcome . If everyone feels so stro9ngly about it then practical jokes should be banned as this could have happened to anyone and it is the luck of the draw

she must of had history with depression or something similar i think if it was anybody she wouldn't of did it but because it was royal member is the main reason she did it
Re: i hope the austraila radio dj are happy with them selfs
I agree steve, If it was a nobody in a normal hospital it would have been okay but this is something now that the nurse would have had for literally the rest of her life and her kids would too (and still will :/)

Sorry but I think she took it way too seriously , if something really bad had happened to Kate and she had accidentally spilled the beans then maybe could understand a little but no sorry not this , this was just most likely an excuse for something bouncing around in someone's mind to begin with

dave she wasn't from this country and she could of come from a colonial country that reverred the royal family.

I'm not mocking her , I just think it's a really unfortunate set of circumstances that she felt the way she did but these 2 people off radio can not be made to feel responsible it was only a prank and a harmless one , even they said they were absolutely amazed it got as far as it did

Re: i hope the austraila radio dj are happy with them selfs
My ex wife is a ward sister and i was talking to her about this tonight. If it sounds like she was from the country we both suspect she was from then it would have been hard for her to be a "laughing stock" to the world. The country i beleive she was from are very religouse and highley ethical in patient care. They leave families behind to come over here to care for our sick for a pitance. My ex claire says they are some of the best people to work with but are very self critical.
I myself love jokes and * myself at others misfortune being a evil git, but i must say this backfired badley. Yeah it could have been just funny, even charles joked about it last night but sadley the world has just lost a lovinv caring person because of it.

Agree with this. You can't tell what someone's mental state is, if they're unstable, depressed, sensitive, etc. and the kind of person who can end up killing themselves because of something like that. I don't think it's entirely their fault, it's not like they knew what the consequences would be. It's like saying that all pranks should be banned because you might target someone who happens to be the kind of person who can react like that. But no-one's going to ban them, so it's just bad luck they got the wrong person, and yeah, it is tragic of course that someone is dead because of it.

Re: i hope the austraila radio dj are happy with them selfs
What what I understood on this story it wasn't massively the prank but the harrassment from the press afterwards making her life hell and on purpose going out of their way to make her life as unbearable as possible.
This isn't the first time the press have caused death by harrassing someone. I agree with 3D something should be done. Guidelines should be introduced that the press have to follow.

As said before it's a massive tragic thing for anyone , not really read into the story just commented on other peoples posts but if this is correct then I can only repeat why punish the 2 radio presenters , the whole of the press should be closed down for stuff like this, scaremongering against our beloved dogs and just generally being abismal sometimes the world would be a far better place without them

Re: i hope the austraila radio dj are happy with them selfs
I agree, nothing wrong with having a prank and they should have kept their jobs. The radio network was probably just too scared to stick by them incase it resulted in a drop in listeners. But even if she did suffer from depression the press do need guidelines to stop them being able to push people over the edge just because they might sell an extra 400 newspapers, disgusting

I just don't see why humiliating someone is seen as acceptable here. I hate bullies and i hate crank calls, why do people get joy out of the hurt and embarrassment of others? I am happy they got fired on the spot and i would be happy for them to be prosecuted.
Had they been bullying her over the internet and she killed herself could you honestly sit and say "well the bullies weren't to know how serious she would take it"

Hayley , come on this wasn't anything remotely like bullying , I detest that myself and would love to bully the bully, it wasn't even an obnoxious call it was just a hoax.

I have to agree with Dave. It was done for a laugh. If they did it to me I would laugh it off. However I do think that when the press have it in for someone they take things too far and can make a whole nation hate someone even though they don't even know the person.

It is the press to blame and they could turn the most innocent situation into the world's worst disaster

But you could say that every joke has the possibility of hurting someone if the subject that the joke is about is close to home, but I wouldn't say that the person who tells the joke is bullying the person hearing it

There is a big difference between humour and bullying , they could only bully this person if they knew the person they were calling , she just happened to be the person to pick the phone up. It's the press that have turned it into bullying

I agree to a point, i passed a note to one of our sales guys once to follow up a lead from a guy at a big paint company called "matt finish" they played along and put him through to "matt" who promptly asked if we could get him a long weight and put him on hold for 20 mins before the penny dropped. That was funny but i think you have to be carefull when it involves people you dont know and it has the potential to go global. Poor woman she must have felt like the world was laughing at her and that just isnt right

Re: i hope the austraila radio dj are happy with them selfs
I was VERY upset when I heard of this poor lady's death and have read all your comments with interest and mixed feelings.
However, I find myself siding with Hayley - I always feel that "pranks" are making a mug out of someone, and that the jolly laughing pranksters cannot always predict how that "someone" will react to the humiliation they will inevitably feel.
I could go on, but what has been done has been done. The world would be a poorer place if we can't have a laugh, but that laugh should not be at the expense of another person, that is just cruel.
Her poor family - deprived of a mum, my thoughts are with them.

Just a quick update.. 2dayfm, the station that the DJs worked for have pledged that all advertising profit from now until the new year, est. $1,000,000.00 will be donated to the nurses family..

Re: i hope the austraila radio dj are happy with them selfs
It was a prank that backfired, the DJs expected to get hung up on. Even Prince Charles made a joke about it! I think the nurse must have had an underlying mental condition. It is so sad RIP Jacintha

Re: i hope the austraila radio dj are happy with them selfs
i dont think she had any past problem she also wasn't brought up in this country or like we were and making a mistaken like push her over the edge.
Re: i hope the austraila radio dj are happy with them selfs
Well this is the point isn't it - victims of "pranks" aren't always known to the jolly pranksters so they have no idea what the results of their may be.
IF this lady had an underlying mental condition or even was just excessively sensitive we don't know, and neither did the pranksters. If she did have either of these conditions it wasn't her fault, and I say this as I feel that the underlaying sub-text of some comments about her (not only on this forum) is "oh well, she was loopy anyway".
I just hope that if anyone in the future feels like playing a "funny" trick on anyone, that they know the person they are tricking and that that person is strong enough to deal with the denouiment.
None of this will bring this lady back - I just hope that future funsters will just stop and think before they humiliate anyone.
