Hello :)
Hi everyone!
I adopted my 19mo staffy, Rosie, last Sunday - 5 days ago. She has already had pups by the looks of it - too early in my opinion - as her teets still sag. The getting-to-know-her stage is going well, but as I've read a few stories and information about Staffies originally being bred to fight other dogs I've been wary leaving her by herself in public or what streets I walk her down. She has lunged at dogs that run to their front yard gate and bark at her so I am worried that she might do the same to an antisocial dog that might be tied up outside our local grocery store. Because I didn't raise her myself I know it's going to take time for us to get a long as well as if I did. So far I've been socialising her with a friends male Shitzu cross but as neither dogs are desexed they've both been getting a little bit too excited around each other haha. The Shitzu is very submissive but my Rosie has never shown her belly, not even to me.
Wish me luck!

Re: Hello :)
Hi there and welcome from Me n Steffi
Did you rescue from a shelter? They should have told you what her temperament with other dogs was like.
Do you know anyone else with well socialised dogs? If not try going to some local dog parks on a quiet day, go to one that has an on lead park, so other dogs will be onlead too.. Explain to others owners that she has only been with you a short while so to approach calmly, keep her on lead and watch her body language.. See how she really reacts to other dogs. Have a read of this and try to learn it so you can read her better.

Keep calm and talk gently to her while meeting new dogs.. Good Luck and let us know how you go

Re: Hello :)
I bought her from an owner who had her for a month as she offered to take her from a friend who was moving. She was living with a mini foxie, a cat and a young child. Mind you, the lady I bought her off didn't have much control at all over Rosie or the mini foxie.
I will give those ideas a go! I've looked after other dogs that were great around most dogs they met and I was able to tie them up outside the shop while I got groceries, but now that it's my own dog I want to make sure she's very well behaved.
Thank you!

Re: Hello :)
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
We could never tie up dogs outside shops here in the UK, the dog would probably get stolen, it's just not the done thing.
Hope all goes well

Re: Hello :)
Hi & welcome.
Please don't leave her tied up outside a shop etc unattended. There are some very unscrupulous people around who would think it a gift from heaven to take your girl & use her as a breeding machine or even worse, as a bait dog!

Her original name was Missy, but the name 'Missy' never really seemed to grab her attention. I tried Rosie out one night and I got an immediate response from her
