Serves her right? Empty Serves her right?

Ok, this could be a very long post if I let myself go off tangent too much, so I'll try not to.
To begin with, I live with Leaim and his mum, along with Molly, a cat, two ferrets and a snake, but they're not really the problem, the other animals I mean, the main issue is the following:

Molly gets away with EVERYTHING with Leaim's mum, she's allowed on the kitchen table, she gets fed from the table, if she barks at visitors or gets over excited, Leaim's mum almost encourages her to do it, worse still is the fact I'm trying to get Molly to do the opposite, i.e. not get on the table, not bark at visitors.

Now this morning, Molly got onto the table and ate Leaim's mum's toast, now as far as I'm concerned this serves her right. If she actually stopped feeding the dog at the table and letting her jump up on the table and drink her tea out of her cup >.< then she probably wouldn't take advantage.

I guess this isn't so much a problem with Molly, but I don't know how to raise this issue with Leaim's mum without causing arguments, any tips?

Oh, boy! Short of laying down the law & saying "What I say goes!" I don't know what you can do!

Have you tried sitting down & explaining that you don't want her doing those things & that you're trying to train her to be a 'good citizen'? (You probably have, but it's worth a shot!).

What does Leaim say? Does he let his mum get away with it?

I got the same problem with my mum she lets the dogs get away with everything and jumping up all over her and she will not listen and now my dogs are jumping all over people again after i got them to stop, but now Taz is getting to big she is learning her lesson because he has hurt her a few times.

I think he's just trying to keep the peace between us all, basically, listening to me rant and help where he can, but won't actual say anything to her.

I think sitting down with her is probably the only way forward. I feel like I have to be constantly on guard when she is in the kitchen, she's a bit clumsy and sometimes misses the table and ends up smashing body parts against it, at which point Leaim's mum says "You've got to stop jumping up, you're hurting yourself" An hour later, she's back on the table again >.<

A nice calm chat over a cup of tea is the only way I think you can go. I sympathise - I lived with a boyfriend & his mum years ago, and it wasn't easy.

Feel sorry for you I had the same problem with my mum I had my own place then moved back in with her with Ty in toe at first she let me get on with it myself, then after a while she started to feed him off the table and let him on the kitchen work tops untill he smashed a jar of coffee then it was like "hes your dog what you doing letting him up there and blah blah" She used to let him get away with alsorts. I had to tell her to back off and leave it to me again as he was my dog and when I move out I dont want him still doing that when he is with me. I do feel sorry for you as its not your own mum its the o/hs and you cant just tell her to do one like you would your own lol so I think its a sit down job and ask nicely as you dont want this behavoiur to continue when you get your own place. Hope it goes ok for you x

Just a wee update on this.
Since posting this and me yelling at Molly a few times to get down after jumping up on Leaim's mum when she's eating, the behaviour seems to have stopped, well almost. She doesn't jump up and whimper as much now. Whether she's still being sneakily fed food or not is another matter.

Feel for you but at the end of the day Molly is your dog and ground rules really need to be set!

Good luck, love my mum but I moved out 10 years ago and I'm sorry but I dont miss the politics of parents or inlaws!!!!!!!!!! Smile

I also feel for you.
I know how demanding and hard it is to set ground rules when everyone is being consistant. Must be an impossible task when the rules get broke by others in the house.

After I had finishd being annoyed about it I would have had to laugh at her!! It does annoy me though when people feed sid stuff! I only really let have his own food as I don't want him begging at the table and so far so good! He just goes to sleep when we are eating!!

It's a complete pain in the *, the next step is to get her calm with visitors and not have her encouraged to misbehave!

One day.... It's been on the cards for at least 4 years..... But we'll get there eventually, without all the bad habits hopefully!
