Crate advice needed Empty Crate advice needed

Post by Fraggle Sat Nov 10 2012, 14:33

Hi
Me again! Big Grin wave
Just have a question on cages.
I'm doing research on crate training (never done previously), and have been looking at some examples.
Do any f you have an opinon on type/brand ... or more importantly size?!
Alot of the reviews i've read have said metal ones aren't suitable for Staffs as they can do themselves harm if chewed to the amout Staffies can/do.
Also would a crate 76 x 53 x 60 cm be ok for a full grown dog? I'm hoping to get one now that will last through to adult sized.

All help and advice greatfully recieved Big Grin

get the biggest one that you can afford and that fits in the house. I have not read anything about not getting metal cages , both of ours have been. If you don't get metal then the option is plastic and that is a lot more chewable.

The crate you have looked at here sounds about the same size as we had for Tilly and Tommy and don't think I would have been comfortable with it for Tommy's size now at 7 months . Depends how big he / she is going to grow really

I just got Loki a 42" x 28" x 31" metal cage, cos he'd outgrown his old one. He's already more or less the height of an adult male Staff, and the new one he has plenty of room in to stretch about and whatever. So maybe get a bigger one just so she'd have enough room to stretch.

We got the biggest cage we could, it fits under the stairs (just!) Rolo has plenty of room in it, even though we rarely shut it now. Ours is metal, has a metal tray in the bottom, he's never tried to chew any of it, and it's sturdy enough to contain him when he gets over excited when we have visitors.
ours is 105cm(L) x 70cm(D) x 75cm(H) ish... good luck Smile

Alot of the large crates have room to seperate a sleep are from a toilet area when they are pups and the need goes away once they devolp bladder control.

Thank you all so much for the advice. Smile
Like astubliffhacked I ahd thought that getting a large size would counteract the 'not toileting where you sleep' thing ... I haddn't realised that you could divide them up. Brilliant! thumbs up
And the "don't get metal crates" was a responce of some purchaser reviews I have read so I guess I shouldn't take them as gosple Blushing

And, kathytake2 HUGE thanks I didn't know that webiste but it's SO cheep LOVE IT ... I was looking in Pets at home and they were charging £65 + for an extra small crate ....
Huge thnaks for the save ... now I can buy her more toys/chews Laughing

I bought the large size on-line ( can't remember which site ) for just over £30 and had my wee boy in it since day one and he loves it. He has never tried to chew it and regarding toileting.....because it is a large crate we had his bed at one end and several layers of newspapwe at the other. Any accidents he had, and these were very few, happened on the newspaper which was easily cleaned up.

He's 16 weeks now and has gone from 11 pm to 7 am without any slip-ups for several weeks now.

Personally in the very early puppy days we thought it important to have a small toilet area just to cope with the accidents so he / she doesn't mess the bedding , just use a smaller amount of bedding . It would be quite rare I think though not impossible to have and accident free puppy. As you progress then the pup learns that outside is for toilet and the crate turns into 1 hooooooge bed.

If you find you have wasted your money in the early days because pup doesn't have an accident then great for pup, and you don't have to change the crate again as pup gets bigger

Sophie has a 42 inch crate from Amazon which she asks to go to bed in.
Amazon have them at about £40.
