Billy's weight
Went to the vet yesterday to have Billy chipped and in 2 weekd he had put 1kg in weight on. The vet said that was too much and should only be putting on 300gm a week not 500gm as this will weaken his legs.
He does not seem to be eating more than usual and he it walked 3 times a day, so i don;t know where the extra weight is from.
Has this happend to anyone else? what can we do to help Billy

Re: Billy's weight
This happened to Molly once, we took her on holiday to my parents, she wasn't really eating any more than normal, it only happened for that one week, to be honest, I'd just keep an eye on it, track his weight for a little while, then consider how much he's eating, not just his food, but the amount of treats he's getting, or table scraps, if he gets any.

Re: Billy's weight
Holly was averaging a kilo a week... it has slowed down to about 600gms a week... I dont think there is any problems with that.
I would just keep an eye on his weight
I have noticed that Holly enjoys 2 larger meals ( morning and late afternoon) and she has a bone ( more for bordem while i am working) about lunch time.. seems to keep her going till about 4 pm when the kids and hubby get home... she has been fine

I wouldn't worry too much, as said keep an eye but he's growing and they all grow a different speeds.

Re: Billy's weight
Just keep an eye open for him looking too podgy. Vets have this annoying habit of generalising everything - it's all averages. Every pup is different and they all grow at different rates. As long as he is active & not fat (ie you can feel his ribs with gentle pressure) then I wouldn't worry about it.
My vet said a similar thing about Dempsey when he was 12 weeks old, and yet he wasn't in the least podgy. When I mentioned this, she said "well, going by the weight chart he's growing too quickly. You'll have to slow him down!
That's when I changed vets.

Re: Billy's weight
haha thats hilarious caryll.......dear me!! As caryll says as long as u can feel his ribs easily but not see them and he is in nice overall condition and he gets good exercise i wouldnt worry about what the vets say. They told me the other day that my 8 months old Kaos looked small for his age ?!?!?!?!? Now i can tell u that his alot bigger than my 16 month old and in no way is small 4 his age at 21kg and its not all muscel (spelling) either im ashamed to say lol x

Re: Billy's weight
thanks everyone for your help. I did get a bit scared about what the vet said, but know I think in the end it is just common sense.

Re: Billy's weight
It's frustrating, in my opinion, some vets don't have a clue what they are talking about!
