Cassie tries to eat my vacum
Cassie has been with us 6 1/2 weeks now and everyday she tries to eat the vacum cleaner, she growls and barks ferociously at the hoover when i use it,i have tried treat distraction and it works for a while.I am just wondering if its fear of me using it (that would be a great excuse not to do it lol) if i leave it in the middle of the room she's not interested, but if i move too fast she cowers,if a door slams she hides in her crate shaking so it may just be me she is frightened of even though i am home with her and i feed ,walk and train her. The worst punishment she gets is she has to wait for a treat and only gets it if she does what is asked of her.Any idea's of how i can convince her that i am no threat to her and i love being with her (i think i should of sent this to the daily mirror problem page ) we had a nice biege carpet till Cassie came along now its a dirty paw print mud colour but who cares?she's family, it can be upsetting that she can be afraid of me what can i do?

Re: Cassie tries to eat my vacum
I've found that using the cleaner briefly on the opposite side of the room from the dog, little and often, desensitizes them quickly enough. Maybe just 20-30 seconds at a time, up to 10 times a day - not for long enough for the dog to react.
I do the same thing with car travel, muzzles, etc etc - short exposure, lots of praise. Then gradually increase exposure time.
My foster is now tolerant of the vacuum cleaner after a week of showing her that it's no threat - she wants to play with it, rather than tear its guts out and spit down its neck.

I can't help with the hoover thing, I nearly have to run Moo over to get her to shift! & as for the beige patchy carpet, they're all the rage I promise

Re: Cassie tries to eat my vacum
Densil used to try and eat the hoover when I was using the small attachment to do the stairs. We bought a dog gate and put him in the kitchen whilst I was hoovering. However, recently I did the hoovering whilst he was still in the hall and he didn't bother to go for it at all, so can only assume he has got used to it.

Re: Cassie tries to eat my vacum
Tali hates the hoover too! i always wonder why she has such a vendetta against it. I laugh with the OH and say that maybe its because she thinks its going to suck her up. Do you have an upright hoover or a hand-held one (like a henry, sorry don't know the technical term!) I find with our Henry hoover she goes insane, think its the movement and the backwards and forwards which get her in that zone. She will growl at the dyson if it goes too close to her but doesn't get so upset. I find body blocking and stopping the arm-action of the hoover generally snaps her out of it. Then I send her back to her allocated place whilst I'm hoovering (usually the sofa!). I repeat every time she gets up and things have gotton better. However she still perceives poor old Henry as a threat, and trys to out-growl him at every given opportunity! Best way to desensitise her would be to have someone else hold/hoover and to reward her for 'leaving' it. I just can't do this when I'm alone! Funny though the other dogs are scared of it but just stay out the way!

Re: Cassie tries to eat my vacum
We have an upright hoover,Cassie only attacks it when i use it she doesnt bother when anyone else uses it (which is quite rare lol) I have managed to do a whole room by giving treats ,she has even took treats of the vacum while its running but as soon as the treats stop she picks the front end up in a tug of war growling and sounding like she is trying to kill it,but i wont turn it off or put it away while she is reacting because if she thinks she has chased it away she will think she has won,or is that wrong and im thinking like a human not a dog?

Re: Cassie tries to eat my vacum
As working dog says try using the vacuum cleaner little and often about the house. Rocky will just lay in his bed and would let you vacuum around him I'm sure. Try introducing him to the cleaner when it is switched off just push it around with it off, you will probably look a little bit odd, but dont worry about that

Dexter goes for the hoover if we are using the hose, he doesn't care about it if we don't. They are so funny sometimes

This is what we did with Suki. Just takes some time for them to get comfortable with it.

My pup attacks just about every cleaning item in the house. Vacuum, mop bucket, duster, cleaning cloth, If it moves he goes for it lol. He also attacks anything made of cast iron, especially the fire tools, he is mad.

Re: Cassie tries to eat my vacum
My Bella is also running after every cleaning items... Just when using, not when it's put a side. I just told her a determined NO! plenty of times, and she quit quite fast. Occasionally now and then she runs after it, but as soon as I say no, she backs up and goes to sleep.

Re: Cassie tries to eat my vacum
Thank you everyone for the advice, here's the results of a few weeks of work with her. Cassie still reacts but if i keep talking and the occasional treat i can vacum without too much agro. Here's a quick vid to show her now.

Re: Cassie tries to eat my vacum
Pixee hates the hoover, lawmower, mop, but in time and patient with a firm no leave, she has accepted the hoover, mop and will now sit on the top decking while I mow the lawn. She deserves a gold for waiting on the top decking while I mow. Sometimes she will ever now try and go for the hoover, but a firm no leave, she will leave, then I will give her a treat. You should see my hoover, the teeth marks on it
