please help
hi everyone
i am new to this sort of thing but hope that someone can help me. i am looking after a freinds 4yr old male staff and am quite worried, every so often he seems to bleed from his penis, it doesn't seem to affect him but it worries me. as far as i can tell it is coming from inside and not an external injury althought i have been assured he has visited a vet in the past and been told everything is fine i would still like a second oppinion.
thank you
suzy

Re: please help
I take it this is some kind of long term care ?? Can't say I've had an experience of it but if you are caring long term I would pop him to the vet to be sure, different vet different thoughts

Re: please help
im not sure how long but if possible i would like to keep him permanently, unfortunately money is an issue at the moment so this may sound a bit silly but would an RSPCA vet be able to help? the reason i ask is they are only open an hour once a week and am concerned it will be a quick in and out visit as they are probably very busy

Re: please help
Blood from the penis is not normal. I know I have not had a male dog before, but I have now and if he bled from the penis I would have him at the vets as quick as lightening.
I would do the same (doctor of course, not vet! ) with my husband or son. How many male humans would think this is normal?
Just read your last post - sorry, I don't know about RSPCA vets but maybe someone else can help here. Will the dog's owner not help at all?

Re: please help
i have mentioned that he needs to go to the vet but nothing has been done yet so thought i would get some further advice as i have not had any experience with staff's before. i did contact the owner earlier but still havent had a reply yet so will probably take him to RSPCA vet myself although cant get him there till friday as thats when their clinic is. apparently it has been happening for some time which is why the owner isnt concerned but i would rather be safe than sorry as he is such a lovely dog

Suzy, this is so difficult for you and I feel for you. Obviously we don't know why or how this dog came into your care, but you are showing that you are concerned about this dog and his owners don't seem to be.
As Caryll said, this is not normal - Staffy or not, human or not - it does need investigating.
I'm afraid I don't know much about RSPCA care or indeed PDSA (maybe they would be worth a try?)
I hope that someone out there can advise regarding affordable vetinary care - this dog obviously needs it and he is very lucky that he has you to look out for him.
Good luck

Re: please help
If you go to your local vet Suzy they will more often than not offer you an easier way of paying

Re: please help
Not sure what its like over there but here you could definitely get an SPCA vet to look at it first - they've had the same training any other vet has. They might refer you elsewhere if its something for which they don't have the facilities to treat but its a start.

Re: please help
hi guys sorry for the late reply zepp has been to the vets turns out he has had trauma to his penis at some point which hasnt healed properly which is why he continued to bleed. the vet has recommended we get him snipped and has given us a voucher so will be booking him in for that. also the owner has admitted that we can take better care of him than she could so he is now ours permanently very happy about that. good news all round

Re: please help
Great news Suzy - thanks for letting us know. I suppose the vet will repair the trauma when they snip him. And how good to know that he is now All Yours - well done.
