Teething

Hiya, Maggie is 20 weeks, has lost most of her front teeth and is now losing the big ones. I've given her frozen rags but she doesn't seem interested and seems really sorry for herself (she's eating normally). I was wondering whether to give her calpol. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you.

Poor Maggie. I can't offer any advice myself as all the dogs I've had never experienced any discomfort with teething, just given them the normal chewy things we all give to teething puppies.

But we rub stuff onto the gums of our children when they're teething don't we, and maybe give them some soothing medicine, so it's an interesting point and I hope that someone can advise you.

The only thing I would say that is what is safe for a child might not be safe for a dog, but I don't know enough about it personally.

I would not give a dog human medicine, but pets at home stock this .

Ice cubes are good and frozen carrots or even just cooled carrots frim the fridge.

Above all, get a stagbar (petathome) awesome for teething and they really satisfy they chewing desire. (buy a large one) it will last ages ! X

Yea Percy is managing with carrots from the fridge, his stag bar and his 'teddy' type soft toys, now it's the big back teeth, he's pushing the paw of a teddy right into the back of his mouth and giving it a good old chew.....he also likes it if I massage the sides of his mouth, (where the back teeth are), don't think it will stop the pain but he must find it soothing

Loki didn't have any discomfort with teething (that I noticed anyway). I gave him ice cubes, but mainly he just chewed his teddies, blanket, StagBar, etc.

Thank you all. I think I'll give the calpol a miss. She's chewing her teddies and blanket. I just gave her a frozen carrot and she swallowed it whole and sat looking at my cornetto!! Maybe cornetto's are the way forward. I'll try again tomorrow with the carrots though it sounds like a good idea. She's not all that interested in the stagbar at the minute but I'm hoping that will come. Thank you again. x

You could try putting peanut butter on the stag bar to get her interested

I tried frozen carrots and was great with my boy but made laska poo through the eye of a neadle so try little and move up if you try them. Rope toys are great at getting the teath out which is the main thing. I got a bit worried with laska as she had a double set if teath for a while then all of a sudden they all came out within days.

harvey never sempt to be bothered when teething but i gave him his bones frozen, i also put his rope toys in the freezer as he plays with them alot of with them being cold helps soothed his gums

Ice cubes and frozen carrots were a life saver for me when Bailey was teething

Ice cubes, frozen Kong and teething gel for babies that doesn't contain paracetamol is fine to use (advised by the head nurse at my vets)

These have been life savers for us and has saved the house from total destruction lol.
