First week on raw diet.....
So this week was Tyson's first week on raw... All was going perfectly until he started by throwing up at 2am a few nights ago. Since he has had diarrhoea but is fine and happy in himself and still wolfing the stuff down!
Tonight I saw there was blood in his poop so I rang the vet just to get some advice, feel like a terrible mumma now!
I was questioned about everything, then asked what other vitamins he was on as he doesn't get everything he needs from raw. Cut a long story shirt, he's on pasta and chicken for the next few days until it passes and taking Protexin Prokolin+ Antidiarrhoeal Probiotic Paste also.
She also said on the raw diet, I need to take extra precaution with worms so he needs to be wormed every month now instead of every 3 months - does anyone else do this??
Help! Where did I go wrong???

Re: First week on raw diet.....
Got no experience of raw but from what I've read on here, it isn't popular with vets because they don't know much about it and I certainly don't recall people talking about extra worming

What have you been feeding? Have you stuck with one protein source or have you given a few? The throwing up can happen as he's not used to the bone so I wouldn't worry about that!
He doesn't need any added vitamins, as long as he gets a varied diet, but it can't hurt to give a few things extra if you wish! But to start with you should stick to chicken for a week or 2 till he's used to it before adding in anything else.
There's a minimal risk of worms from food, just freeze it for a few days - week before feeding it!

Sorry your vet is talking * which is why i don't talk to mine.
What have you been feeding up until the tummy upset?
With raw if they have a dicky belly you go back to feeding just raw chicken, don't feed pasta and chicken it will muck up their belly.
No you don't need vitamins they get everything from raw, any extra are just extras.
No you don't need to worm more just worm as normal
Oh and IGNORE your vet

Re: First week on raw diet.....
I can only totally agree with Ella.
My vet told me he "couldn't recommend" me feeding Dempsey raw. He said he'd be plagued with worms, would get bone backed up in his gut etc, etc. I changed vets about then & when I mentioned it to my new vet, he questioned me about what I was feeding, said "well of course I can't actually endorse it, but he looks good on it, doesn't he?" and never mentioned it again.
Vets kniw how to heal animals, but know very little about raw feeding, the benefits & how to do it! They are not nutritionists & I wouldn't expect them to be.
Persevere, and your dog will get used to it.
One thing, though, which meat are you feeding as a main protein source? If it's chicken, just be aware that some dogs can be chicken intolerant & you might need to limit the amount you give him.
