Possible new owner
Hi everyone,
My wife and I met a young lady today (4yo) at a rescue. Her history doesn't seem to match the dog. I can't really say to much on open forum due to reason she ended up in rescue.
I have spoken to our vet for advice and I have had pleasure of living with Dobermans, boxers, weimaraner and rottweillers but only know one person who had a staffy a long time ago which was a brilliant dog.
I have a few questions, regarding homing, history and probably loads of others as time goes along if anyone fancies sharing their experience or even allowing me to give them a call to have a chat(I've been thoroughly vetted through work so don't worry).
I spent about 4 hours last night reading these forums before joining and it seems a good place to be.

Hi Heysham and welcome to the forum from me and my girls Kita & Izzy
I cannot give you any advice on rescues, but there are many on here that can.
As you have already said you have spent a few hours on the forum before joining, please don't hesitate to ask any specific questions that will help you make your decision and hopefully become owned by a staff like us.
Once you have one they change your life, your thoughts and everything else you have ever known or experienced when it comes to owning dogs. They really are the most human type dog I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and spending my life with.

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
I can highly recommend the breed, having said that Rocky is also a rescue dog and has completely changed our lives around. He is the most gentle and affectionate dog I have ever known.
Will the rescue centre be making a home check on you ? If so it may be worth making sure that your garden, if you have one, is very secure.
Any questions you think of please dont hesitate to ask.

Re: Possible new owner
Hi Kathy, we have to make around 4 visits to take her out then we spend time with their dog behaviourist after that we can take her home for maybe half a day a couple of times then if that works out she can move in, after that we get dog classes with the behaviourist.
One of my wifes concerns is that she has pet rats and is worried if they will be to tempting.
The rescue told us she is part pit bull (the dog not the wife) but she looks staffy to me, she is sharing a kennel with another dog and when walking has no interest at all in other dogs, part way through our first walk yesterday she decided to lay flat on her back and want her tummy rubbing, looking at her it is so hard to imagine what she has been through and to be the way she is most humans wouldn't be.

Re: Possible new owner
Hi & welcome!
Re: the rats, a lot of dogs, no matter what the breed, will get on well with other pets as long as they are introduced carefully & supervised 100% of the time. My boy, Dempsey would eat a rat, but my previous boy, Bandit, would have just let it walk all over him!
I'm surprised at the rescue centre mentioning that she's part pit - that would make her an illegal breed! If you do get her, then just tell people she's a staffy cross; much safer!
P.S. Tell your wife, that to people like us (bull breed lovers) that comment about being part pitbull would be a compliment!

Re: Possible new owner
Hello and welcome.
I don't have experience rescuing, many other members do.
I wanted to comment because I know several pit bulls--here in the US more common than Staffs. I think they're a little like Staffies--love people, goofy, chewy, prefer your lap to being by themselves. The ones I've met have been well-socialized and good with Callie, though obviously that depends on the dog. So if she is part pit, don't tell, but I wouldn't worry about her temperament for that reason.
Hope it works out for you and her
p.s. Callie would be terrified of a rat but she's kind of a wuss

Thanks Dave, Hi Caryll, I used to have a rescue doby that was like that with other animals he was so friendly but protective without being nasty. On their website it says staffy x but we were told different by guy that works there. I double checked with guy that seems to have the most info on her and he confirmed she isn't on the dangerous dogs list and would not need to be muzzled

Re: Possible new owner
Hi, We got our Staffie Bailey 3 weeks ago, he is a rescue as well. I have never had a dog before and was not looking for a staffie, it was my other half who persuded me to go see him. I can honestly say it was one of the best things I have done, and would have had a dog/staffie much sooner if I only knew how much he has enriched our lifes. I hope if you do get your dog that he brings as much enjoyment as Bailey has for us.

Welcome great that you're looking into the rescue and I hope everything goes well. I can't really give much advice on it all, but there are lots of people here who can, so at any time if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Re: Possible new owner
Hi Heysham
We have taken the step you are thinking about. On Saturday we welcomed Morgan into our home. A 4 yr old staffie who had been in the dogs home for almost three months. We have only had him for 5 days but I can honestly say it is the best thing we have ever done. Yes, he has some obvious issues (scared of brooms and won't go in the garden) but even after only five days we have already seen him go from a quiet boy to a dog who is becoming less insecure and more confident. It's a great feeling - I would say go for it. This is our new boy Morgan.

Welcome to the forum.
All my dogs are rescues including a Staffy and I have a foster dog. All that sounds like over kill unless there is a big problem with the dog. I know a lot of rescues, most take Staffies but never go to that extreme.
One of my wifes concerns is that she has pet rats and is worried if they will be to tempting.
Rats are tempting to a lot of dogs not necessarily Staffies, in fact my Staffy wouldn't get a look in if I had pet rats, the others would be there a long time before him. You will have to keep the rats safe no matter what breed of dog you got until you were 101% sure the dog won't attack the rats.
The rescue told us she is part pit bull (the dog not the wife) but she looks staffy to me,
If she was part Pit Bull and you are in the UK, the rescue would be breaking the law by letting you have the dog.
she is sharing a kennel with another dog and when walking has no interest at all in other dogs, part way through our first walk yesterday she decided to lay flat on her back and want her tummy rubbing, looking at her it is so hard to imagine what she has been through and to be the way she is most humans wouldn't be.
My Staffy nearly starved to death, you would think he would eat anything but he won't, he is quite a fussy eater.
