'Investigations of a dog' by Kafka
The dog, who is the hero of the story is a bit of a philosopher. His life's work is to investigate the question 'From whence does food come?' He notes that food comes from two sources: the ground and the air. Ground food tends to appear in more or less the same spot while food from the air tends to appear anywhere. (These are his dinner appearing in his dish, and treats given to him by hand - just incase you hadn't got it )
The dog is a bit of a highbrow and is a little annoyed by other dogs who don't really care where food comes from as long as it comes. He does various experiments to see if food appearing is a variable or a constant. I loved it when he said that in order to ensure that food comes, it is necessary to water the ground copiously. He recalls his mother telling him and his litter-mates to always water the ground, but he wonders if this is really the reason why food comes, hence the investigation.

Did they find out why they cuddle up to their owners on the bed then fart on their leg?
Then when you say you dirty bugger they just wag their tail and waft it in your face?

I've been trying to find this book but can't! Do you know if it's included in any of the 'short stories' books?
