Sad is my puppy deaf...???

Post by Roca Fri Oct 05 2012, 10:10

My puppy is 10 weeks old now and ive got her for 3 weeks. Shes acting like a deaf dog Sad

Ive started to training her about 2 weeks ago, when i have a treat she can understand sit, leave and down, but im not sure if because she see me and my hand Sad When she play with my missus and I call her she just ignore me even when ive got a treat.

Is anybody had this problem with a dog? Maybe shes just ignoring me because shes young - thats my hope:(
Im going to vet in 2 weeks time and I will try find out whats going on.

You can ask the vet to check her out, but all he'll be able to do are the usual 'noise' tests which aren't conclusive.

If you want to know the full extent of her hearing you will need to get her BAER tested. It's a harmless, painless way to test the amount of hearing in each ear, individually, but most vets will not have the equipment necessary. The nearest to you would probably be Newmarket.
ANIMAL HEALTH TRUST: Centre For Small Animal Studies, Lanwades Park, Kentford, Newmarket, Suffolk, CB8 7UU

It isn't very expensive, it's just getting there that's the hard part!

This doesn't always work, the dog can pick up on vibration, shadows etc & won't tell you if the deafness (if there is any) is partial or profound, neither will it tell you how much hearing there is in each ear.

Another way is to close her into a room, set up a camera and make a loud noise like with a foghorn thing. If she reacts she can hear a little something anyways. But she is pure white so unfortunately there is a great possibility she could be.

Yes, it might be worth a try, but it won't be a definitive answer. White dogs, especially, often have at least a degree of deafness & if you want to know exactly what the hearing is like in each ear, the only way is a baer test. Sad

Even if your pup is deaf, it isn't the end of the world. Deaf dogs can learn signs (as you've already discovered), and can live very happy lives!

You might want to invest in a vibrating collar if it's confirmed that she is deaf.

If you think she is deaf, the test Caryll recommended would be a good way to confirm it. Sooner you know, the better you can come to terms with it and learn more about how to deal with it. If she is, don't worry though; dogs have great hearing, but they don't really rely on it as much as their other senses (at least, in my opinion). You can use hand signals to train her, she'll be fine Smile like a dog with three legs, you'd think they're at a disadvantage but they never act like it.

That seems very expensive. It's normally only about £20 + vat. Are you sure they're bone fide?

Please beware. I've googled & can't find any baer testing facilities in Birmingham, and the amount sounds far too high. Generally speaking it should only cost about £20 +vat. I've also had a word with an EBT breeder (White EBTs are known for deafness) and she didn't know of anywhere in Birmingham & agrees that the price is steep.

Thanks Caryll for info, just sent email to Chestergates Hospital.

I went today to my vet and ask in reception where can I do baer test. They said to me I need to book appointment to check it first. After I booked appointment I asked for a price and they said £25 for consultation (for a first injection, 1 wormed tablet I paid about £19) !!! What they gonna say to me, you need to do baer test? I know my puppy is deaf... not very helpfull, I think I need to change my vet... Sad

It isn't really the vet's fault. They would prefer to be in at the start of any health problems & would then (I suppose) refer you to a specialist.

The thing is, you can go straight to baer testing without a vet's referral (whereas a lot of problems do need a vet's referral), and a lot of them haven't even heard of it!

Im ok now and she got load of love from me, it was just sad to find out she wont hear me. Shes really playfull dog and very smart.
Sign training going very well - she knows how to sit, stay, leave, paw, high five, down, crawl, up and how to walk next to me close to my leg - Im really proud of her, all this after only like 1 week of training! (and this is my first dog I ever had) applause
