A step in the right direction?
What do you guys think? A lot of the ideas put forward in this bill make sense in theory, though I think it will be difficult to implement them.

Re: A step in the right direction?
The only thing I'm still a little concerned about is the 'private places' bit. I know that they say that they will take into account if someone is using threatening behaviour towards the dog's owners etc, but what about tresspassers? I know that Dempsey, for example, would definitely 'go' for anyone who came on to my property without permission, whether it's garden or house.
I am glad, however, that the BSL is to be repealed - what a useless & distressing piece of legislative c**p that was!

Caryll - thats the bit I was concerned about. I live on a council estate and theres loads of crime in our block. I would hate for someone to stick their hand through my letter box trying to break in, they would have no fingers left if Skibadee saw them. Tali would probably lick their hands!

Re: A step in the right direction?
Definitely an improvement but they do need to take dogs natural instincts into account because as you've said, dogs are naturally protective of their territory. That definitely needs to be taken into consideration but this is definitately a big improvement on the bsl.

Ithink anything has to be better than the one we have at the moment.
It is a worry about the private property thing and I no my girl wouldnt but my boy will let me know someones there dont know how far he would go as hes never been tested.
The thing that worries me as well as I know this gets done in the usa is if the dog isnt good with other dogs they get uthinised now that would be a problem to some owners

It isn't perfect, but it's better than before. I just hope that common sense plays a part when the police look at incidents on private property, or when they see a well controlled, but dog agressive dog.

Re: A step in the right direction?
Surely they couldn't euthanise dogs just for being DA? Thats horrible, i didnt even know they could do that in the US. Every dog like evry person is different, just because they dont like something whos to say they should lose their life?

Re: A step in the right direction?
I think it is a massive and brilliant improvement on what we have in place at present. As Caryll has said, the private property issue with regards to tresspassers is worrying, but it has always been the case in the UK that if somebody breaks into your property and your dog (any breed ) bites them, or if you yourself injure them then under British Law you are liable. The dirty scum burglar can sue you and win.
The man who owns the market garden where we buy our veg was taken to court a couple of years ago because his place was burgled and his rottie bit the burgler. The man was fined and his dog was ordered to be pts. Basically, you do not have the right to protect your own property.
