Honestly, if you get in the face of a food aggressive dog, you have to expect to get bitten!

I can't watch him, he was told when he came to the UK that he couldn't use quite a few of his methods, if he did he would be prosecuted as he was being watched closely.

It does not take brains to see the outcome in the first few frames.

Re: How NOT to deal with food aggression...
I'll be completely honest, I used to agree with his methods. I never watched him or anything, but this woman whose site I followed agreed with him about the pack leader thing (though she never used confrontation or anything physical, just body language and tone), so I assumed I'd like him. But after watching some of his videos, even if he was right, it's obvious that his methods are very dangerous to both owner and dog. I don't believe in having to be a dominant-to-the-point-of-bossy-dictator anymore, but even when I did think that was true, I wouldn't have agreed with having a showdown with a food aggressive dog, that's insanity.
I think the worst part of it is that, no matter what, there will be people who try this on their own, and we all know how that would end.

Re: How NOT to deal with food aggression...
is it morally wrong i muttered "good girl" when she got him? considering he's supposed to be a training "god" he should have read her body language better. (i'm not saying i could have, but thats what he claims he's good at...)
to be honest, the more i see of these bully "dominance" tactics for dogs, the less i have any faith at all in them. dogs learn, so if you show them aggression and dominance they wil pick up on that. teach them with smiles, praise, low stress environments and (above all else) patience, the dog will learn through that, and know that good behaviour is good, bad behavior is not allowed.

Re: How NOT to deal with food aggression...
I admit, I was going to try his methods. Not to the point he does, but some of his no eye contact etc seemed to make sense but why should a dog fear you! Fear isn't respect it's just plain basic fear. I did mutter "good girl" too. Idiot.

I would rather do the pretending to eat and share food with the dog so he ain't worried> My sister is in love with Cesar however she has a spoilt Labradoodle who hasn't a cheeky bone in his body x

Re: How NOT to deal with food aggression...
It's a difficult one...I think a lot of it is played up for the tv - he said himself he wanted to end the series 2 years ago but NatGeo wouldn't let him.
I think a lot of his work is pretty important in that he's teaching otherwise dog-tarded people (have you seen some of the owners on that show???) to start listening to their dog's body language and treat them like dogs, not children.
I admire him for taking on some of the dogs he does, they'd have otherwise been pts. If it means him being the dominant dog and bullying them a bit, sometimes I think that's what it takes to save their lives.
That dog seemed to be relaxed and chilled out until he put his hand towards it but I agree, he shouldn't have reached across its head, that was asking for trouble!

Sorry, but nobody held a gun to his head. He does the series because he is very well paid for it.

He'll be written in to a very strict contract I'd imagine. I reckon you don't just walk away from a company like NatGeo!!

Re: How NOT to deal with food aggression...
If he's under contract, then that's fine, he needs to do it. But he's not a stupid man & I can't see him getting involved in long contractual agreements unless he benefits from it.
I know he likes dogs & has 'a way' with a lot of them, but I cannot abide some of his methods which to my mind border on cruelty mental & physical). The whole 'pack leadership' thing, which is what he bases his work on, is flwed and discredited, even by the man who originally came up with it!

Yeah, the only thing that's bad about him is that the methods can be very harsh. Not only that, but people attempt those methods on their own and no doubt injure themselves and their dogs in the process. But, to me, it does seem clear that he loves dogs and thinks he's helping and actually wants to help, and I agree with him in that he's making more dog owners aware that treating their dog as a human isn't the best way for them.

Yeah that's my only real concern with him. In some circumstances I think it needs to be stated very clearly that people shouldn't repeat it unless they really know what they're doing.

All his shows state that, but you know what people are like.
I think what really gets to me is that you don't see the half of what goes on off camera. There have been some clandestine videos that have horrified me, and have been taken off of youtube very quickly by cm's lawyers. The kicks, the punches, the use of prong and shock collars are all things he doesn't want his viewers to see.
