My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
So, I decided to make a kind of casserole for Molly, it's got heart, spinach, carrot, broccoli and cauliflower in it, along with some gravy. Oh it also has some of her mince in, because I had some defrosted that needed to be cooked
Hopefully she'll like it

Looks yummy! But yeah, like niff said, the heart and mince will be better raw for her.

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
I know, but I didn't want to leave it defrosted for two days, so cooked it instead, as I'd have done if I was cooking it for myself.
She usually always has raw heart, well, raw everything.

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
Yeah, she does. We get more comments about her in the street now, positive ones too! Someone said she looks fit the other day, and that we must have her diet right.
She's been a little off her food the past few days, she's been eating one day and not the next. Not too sure why, she had an upset stomach the other day, so it might be that. Gonna see how she is for the next few days.

Has she been spayed? If not, then I wonder whether she's due a season?

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
No, not yet, I never thought of that, it could well be that. She'll be fine one day, wolf all her food down, the next day she'll have like 2 mouthfuls if we're lucky...

As long as she's healthy & lively I wouldn't worry.

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
She's lively alright! We had a friend over and she wouldn't leave him alone, she ate a load of her heart today, so there's not much wrong with her.

shady and dakota eat when they want to not when i put food out though there is always food in their dishes , they pick away at it through the course of the day , unless they are getting their sardines or chicken thighs , these are greatly recieved and devoured

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
We're pretty sure she's coming into season.
She's usually really good at eating her new meals, but as I said that past few days have been a bit hit and miss. And she's VERY vocal at the moment, and well basically a mardy cow.

Did I read somewhere you are feeding Molly raw?
If so....How are you getting on with that?

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
Yeah, we are, she's getting on really well, we need to adjust the amount she is eating a little as she's pretty much at the point where if she looses any more weight she's gonna look unhealthy. She's loving the raw heart, thanks to Caryll! We're going to look at trying her on a little tripe once a week, just for an extra fat boost.

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
Yes, the tripe will put weight on - the Bullyview breeders told me that before a major show they feed tripe for a week, that way they still have the muscle & tone, but they also get a bit of bulk. Dempsey gets tripe about twice a week, and kidneys once or twice. The rest is heart & he's good on that. Dempsey puts on weight really easily though.

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
Nice one!!!
Might nip the butchers in a bit and get a couple of bits for Blue
What should I try him with for a starter?
Do you normally feed bones in the morning and offal/tripe etc at night?

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
At the moment Molly's on a mixture of heart, mince, kidney, chicken wings and vegetables, we have a set routine for her so she's not having the same thing every day. We first started really with liver or kidney with her wet food, but she stopped eating wet food and then we tried her on the mince, which she thrived on.
Most of the time Molly gets her meat between 1 and 3pm, her chicken wings are sometimes breakfast, sometimes dinner, bones are when I remember to get them and she just munches on them throughout the day.

Great to hear Molly is doing well on it.
What is the average amount? about 400g of meat per day plus bones?

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
That depends on how much excercise your dog gets. Dempsey gets a bone either mid morning or mid day (depends whether I'm working or not) and about 500g of heart (or whatever he's having) at about 4.30pm, after his main afternoon run.
I wouldn't give too much mince, though, as the stomach acid doesn't get full use with it, and they can get stomach ache!

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
I tried blue on some chicken and some turkey from pets at home 400g packs. Tried it raw and microwaved. He brought both back up yet when it's cooked chicken meat from tescos he is fine with it.
What would you suggest as a bone to try him on Necks?
Also what raw meat/offal would you suggest to try him on first?

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
Necks would be a good place to start, or chicken wings.
Most dogs LOVE ox heart! If you get it from the supermarket it's very lean, if you get the frozen bags of heart chunks from pets at home there's a bit of fat in there (essential). I normally buy the frozen bags & only use the supermarket if I run out & can't get to the pet shop.
You can try any offal. Most dogs like it all, especially liver. However, liver's a strong taste & some dogs (Dempsey included) don't like it. I give kidneys mainly. I've never been able to find out if tripe is considered offal or meat. I'll have to ask my mate on the bully forum - he's been feeding raw since the year dot!

Thanks Caryll
I'll go hebutchers in a bit and get some necks.
Do I have to freeze them for a couple of days before I give them to him?
Sorry for taking over your post Leaim/Amy

Re: My First Attempt at Cooking for Molly
Ideally all raw meat should be frozen for at least a couple of days before you give them to your dog - it kills the bacteria that would normally be killed by cooking.

I'll let you know how he gats on with the necks in a few days if I manage to get hold of some.
