I've just paid around £20 each for my 2 from Pets at Home (online ) , Ella was cheeky and she called them up and got a bit more off but it's a good policy

http://www.petsathome.com/petinsurance/doginsurance

EDIT JUST CHECKED - review this at your own leisure , when I took the policy (just over a couple of months ago) this policy was called Lifetime extra and ha d £75.00 excess, now it is called Premium plus and is a £75 excess PLUS 10% of the vets bill, not so good in my book . If the old policy is not available next year I will not be renewing with them !!

I have just edited my original post as their policy has changed , I think you can get better

Look for

Lifetime of illness and as much of a per year sum as you can afford , ops can be so expensive these days.

We have insured Rocky with Argos Pet Insurance on a Lifetime policy. The premium is £15.24 per month.

We were previously with PetPlan who wanted £22.50 per month for the same cover.

With Argos we went for the Platinum Policy which should pay out £7,000 in vet fees, £2 Million in 3rd Party Liability and with £65 excess per incident.

Hope this helps.

That sounds like a decent policy , I have 9K per year for lifetime but for £20 each dog but as I say above they have changed their policies in the last couple of months . When I checked Argos for ours it was more expensice , maybe the area ??

Could be, also Rocky is a Staffy cross and insured as so, maybe this makes a difference too.

I use Sainsburys premium. £75 excess for £7500.00 per condition for life. That costs me £28 per month, BUT that's because I claimed around £4000 last year! The first year's premiums were only £14 per month. Mind you, all the insurance companies have put their prices up this year.

Sainsbury's paid out without quibbling & very quickly.

I'd never go for ££ per year - if your dog developed an ongoing condition (diabetes for example) the policy would only pay out for the first year - then you wouldn't be covered by that insurance company any more, but you wouldn't be covered by any insurance company because it would be a pre-existing condition!

££ per year for life is good, but is usually very expensive. ££ per condition for life is generally the best (economically) one to get.

The ladies who do the insurance claims at my vets recommend AXA so my 4 are all with them. They vary in price from £10.50 to £15 depending on the age of my dog. The are insuired for £7000, this starts fresh every year but I also have to pay the excess every year as well. They have recently paid out £300 for x-rays and £2, 000 for an MRI scan, the cost to me was £75.

I used to be with Direct Line with several of my other dogs but they paid out so much for my dogs that I didn't have the nerve to go back. The limit was £6,000 per item, both Merlin and Ellie when over this, they paid out for both Merlin and Gracie to have hydro weekly for 2 years. Unlike AXA the insurnace continued from year to year so I only had to pay one excess of £80.

I wouldn't be happy with the Veterinary fees cover as it's per period of insurance - that normally means that you're only covered until the end of that year's policy - not beyond.

If you went with this one how much is the premium ?? as the PAH one is the same only you get 9K of cover every year and the condition is payable for the lifetime, with this once 7K has been paid on any 1 condition that's it no more fees,. You would hope that this would not happen but if the dog developed a long term illness you could have problems.

You really need to find one with a high "per year" limit that will cover conditions for their lifetime and ask no contributioon other than the excess, though for most policies the excess would be payable every year and for every condition , I think that is quite normal

For this first year of insurance, I've just taken out a standard policy that covers a high amount but only for this year. This is because I've been advised that the first couple of years for any pup usually mean they get into trouble rather than have ongoing issues. The cover was higher per 'accident/incident'.

I'll look into the life long cover rather than annual cover (in the next couple of years - I think).

only Trouble with this is if your pup injures his leg now you will not be able to change insurance company if you want to carry on insuring the leg i.e companies will not insure for pre existing conditions or pre existing injuries , this is why i can never change from Tesco as he had an injury to his leg and his skin conditions , these things with any one else would not be covered

Oh... so if she breaks a leg, and then breaks the same leg doing something different and the break is in a different place (ie, it's not a reoccurance of the original break) I'm not covered?

I might have to check out the small print... This is not how I understood the cover to be!

it is per comdition for life but i have just been to argos and they use the same underwriters .i..e the royal sun and alliance and they seemed to be really good , with their platinum it was 7500 vet fees per year which to me seems really good ,2 million 3rd party and lots of other good coverage , if i could i would have changed to that

and as for the other half of your question if Trouble did his cruciate with one insurance and i then changed that leg would not be insured with another company , and dont think you can get away with not disclosing cos they can check ...so in IMO it really is worth doing your research and make sure you get everything covered ....if you have pots of money then it is not such a worry to not have such huge cover but if like me struggling a bit then it is worth having the maximum cover

If she breaks a leg & you claim off the insurance, then anything to do with that break in future will be considered a pre existing condition. If she then broke the same leg but in a different position, totally unrelated to the first break then it's a new condition.
