chipping dilemma
I was thinking of getting bulley chipped as he keeps slipping through open doors / gates and having a wonder of the street, however the dilemma I have is, he was from a rescue who didn't check if he was allready chipped etc, so if I go the vets and it turns out he's allready chipped will they ring the old owners incase they think I've stolen him? (also) this would find out his previous name which I've always been curious about but I've never checked as really couldn't bare being forced to give him back .
What do you guys think? Thanks in advance

Re: chipping dilemma
If I was you, my main priority would be to ensure he isn't able to just slip out as he may get run over or stolen and a chip wouldn't help you there.
Chipping is still a good idea, just make sure you take your adoption paperwork with you to prove he's yours.
Strange that the rescue didn't check to see if he was chipped and/or chip him before rehoming him.

Re: chipping dilemma
Sounds like the only way to find out is get him scanned for a chip. Ask the vet to do this and also ask them for the details of who the details are held with, which chip company.
Then contact the chip company and get your details updated on their list as the registered owner. If you explain that Bulley is from a rescue centre, that they could contact if need be.
Do you have any paperwork, receipts etc from the rescue centre when you got Bulley, that you could send copies of to the chip company as proof of ownership ?

Re: chipping dilemma
That's another problem the shelter don't do paperwork, its just £50 and you pick any dog, no signed papers or anything.

Re: chipping dilemma
Did you pay cash or use a card for payment ? If by card then you will have your card statement with the payment on.

Re: chipping dilemma
Cash, that was 3 years ago, I don't know the shelter policy, I believe they give 7 days for each dog to be claimed then they have the right to rehome them. But before the vet knows I couldve stolen him, I don't know if he was reported as lost, on any webistes or anything :/

Re: chipping dilemma
if you didn't sign anything and there is no record of you taking him then you just say the vet that you got him off gumtree. if there is a microchip then just deal with it, if he was dumped in a (not great sounding) rescue, then he probably won't be wanted anymore by the previous owners.

Re: chipping dilemma
I'd just explain the whole thing to the vets. You've been in there with Bully for the last 3 years so I'm sure they know you didn't steal him!
They can run the scanner over him & just take it from there.

Re: chipping dilemma
Pets at Home are chipping dogs now, they may scan him for you.
A stray dog has to spend 7 nights in a pound, once they have the dog becomes the property of the local Council so you can't be forced to give him up. All Dog Wardens and pounds have to keep records or the pound doesn't get paid for the 7 nights the dogs are in.
Dogs have been returned to their owners as many as 6 years after they were stolen, these dogs were abandoned by the people who stole them, they were scanned and the owners traced.
I used to work with a pound trying to find rescue places for the dogs, many dogs were chipped when they went into the pound but when contacted the owners said they had sold the dog on previously.
I would always have my dogs chipped but it isn't proof of ownership unfortunately.

Re: chipping dilemma
which rescue was it , sounds like one to avoid 50 quid and he's yours , did they come out and homecheck etc??
Apart from that as already said , make sure he's secure then get him to the vets and explain

Re: chipping dilemma
No website that I'm aware of but it was Swanpit kennels in Gnosall no home check or nothing totally irresponsible of them just giving these dogs away without a care who they go to or what happens not to mention the state bullet was in when I got him

Re: chipping dilemma
It sounds to me that it is unlikely that Bulley is chipped at all. Why not just ask your vet to quickly check that one is not already in place then get it done.

Re: chipping dilemma
Because if he HAS got one in, I don't want to risk them contacting the person he's registered too, but I want him chipped so there's more chance of finding him if he's ever to run away,

Re: chipping dilemma
There's only one way to find out I'm afraid, take him to see if there's a chip!
Its highly likely he would have been scanned for a chip when he was picked up by the dog warden, therefore the original owners have probably already said they do not want him any more.
From the vets point of view, if you had stolen the dog, you wouldn't ask to have him scanned!!

Our SPCA shelter was like that. They're closed down now.

Do you know if he was handed in to the rescue by his old owner, or if he came from a pound?
If he came from a pound, he will more than likely have been scanned - in which case there was either no chip, or the owner wasn't interested/contactable.
