Renaming Tank ...
To Dyson as we can't walk more than 10paces without him hoovering something up ! Literally stopping all the time to empty his mouth ! And he's not even fussy, he will pick up stones, cans, bottletops, bird poop Literally anything.
What can I do to get him to stop cause I'm like a broken record saying Leave all the time !!

Re: Renaming Tank ...
If you are saying it all the time, he will be hearing it all the time so it won't have any effect. Change the word, and also take out some treats and when you say NO or STOP give his collar a tug and if he looks away even in the slightest treat and praise.

I don't think you need to change the word - any word you use will be constantly repeated by the sound of it.
Every time he tries to pick something up, tell him "Leave!" in a firm voice & then make him sit & look at you (the watch copmmand with a treat held up to your face should do the trick). Don't tell him twice - if he doesn't leave the first time of asking, pull him away & make him sit.

Re: Renaming Tank ...
Thx for the advice, I think working on 'watch' will help.

Re: Renaming Tank ...
You may want to try distracting him with a toy as he goes to pick something up

Re: Renaming Tank ...
The only thing I found that worked when Moo was a pavement Hoover was being three steps ahead of her and a firm leave, it really does pay off, she'll now walk past anything tastey and won't go for it

Keep at it. It does get better. Tyson was just the same but has improved as he got older.

We are still having this issue with Suki. We will use a treat as a distraction if we are passing by something we know she will try to eat.

Definitely keep working on the "leave it" command, just do a bit of training with it each day and it'll build up so that he listens to it always. Loki doesn't always respond to it, I need to practice it more with him, but I've found that when he gets distracted by anything (stuff on the ground, people, dogs, cars, etc.), I'll say his name and give a tug on the lead and he'll look at me and get back to walking. I think that works well, teaches him to focus on me, so maybe that'd work for you if you caught him before he got distracted.
