Lovely she is, and wow she is lucky to have all this to walk about on. Does she enjoy the sea?

She loves the sea running in and out of the waves and ragging any seaweed that gets washed up she is so funny to watch, she hasn't been fully swimming in the sea yet as im not totally confident on letting her off the lead down there yet as her recall is not 100%.
what about you how is Pixee at the beach dose she love to go in the sea ?

We live next to the canal, and sadly she wont swim in the canal, however if theres a ledge when the canal is low, she will step on that and put her nose under water. Think it was cos when we first had her, she fell in the canal and couldnt swim, may have scared her. We did go to the beach once, and boy she loved it, digging holes, running in and out the water so long as she could see the floor

Is it her recall or just not allowed on the beach?

All the beaches around here are dog friendly thats the good thing. its her recall she is great over the fields on the farm off the lead she will come back when i call her even if she is saying hello to the horses or lama's in the neighboring fields, but on the beach when she see's another dog or person all she wants to do is say hello and play chase and will not come back when called its as if she has gone deaf.
i have tried using treats and also her fave squeaky toy but nothing seems to work when she gets her deaf head on

Re: Kia down at the beach
I know that feeling very well . Pixee was so bad on recall where other dogs were about. But she has got better. Her recall when theres no dogs about is 100% now. With some dogs lately, she has sat on the sit comment from me, and I have so far able to get her back on the lead, so I am hoping we are getting to the 100% on that one too. Have you tried a whistle?

Sounds like you are almost there if you are starting to get Pixee to sit on command when she is around other dogs
has it taken you a long time with her recall ? and how old is Pixee ?
Kia is 1 year old next month and we have only had her 3 months and she is very bright but an excitable little thing as her first owner had never socialized her with other dogs or people, i have tried a whistling command as this always worked with my other dogs but they have always been lab x collie, i have never tried a dog whistle or ordinary whistle, is that what you find works best ?

Re: Kia down at the beach
As I cant whistle , I have to use a dog whistle. I basiclly use that for when shes out of sight in the woods, or a long way from me, she does come back on two sharp blows. We had Pixee in January and it has taken till now to get her to where she is. Her recall was getting better and better each time we go out, as I never stop this training. The sitting on command has just got better too over time, I always give her such a big fuss and tell her good girl when she does it. PIxee is approx 22 months. She was found a stray hence the approx age. Kia will improve as time goes by, they are very clever dogs. With the Whistle, I first used it in the garden, in the house, then on a long lead in the fields. Ever when she was playing with hubby in the fields. She understands that now. The sit command worked cos to start with, each time a cyclist came pass, I taught her to sit on one side, we always get a thank you, from there as she got better, I started to use it when dogs were about from further away, to put her back on the lead, as time goes by, its got much closer to the dogs now before I use it. We were taken by suprise the other week, Pixee met head on another dog on a bend, straight away I said sit, she did , got her back on the lead no problem.

Teaching Pixee to sit when a cyclist comes past sounds like a good idea we are doing the same for when horses pass us as we get more of them than cyclists around here
think i will give the dog whistle a try, thanks for the suggestion

Re: Kia down at the beach
Hope it works out for you. How lovely it must be all those horses going pass you. Do they ride on the beach? I do ride horses and had a gallop once on a beach, it was sheer bliss.

Re: Kia down at the beach
I have ordered one off line so just waiting for it to turn up,
they do ride on the beach sometimes and it looks like great fun, i dont ride anymore due to back problems plus think i would now need a shire horse to take my weight looking at the size of my bum
the farm next to use breeds horses so there is always plenty around us, there is even some in our back field that lean over my garden fence and eat the flowers and drink out of our water feature, its always funny when i catch them at it, they give you a look as to say oops you got me lol
