Oldest to breed a bitch?
I want to breed another litter of pups from my older bitch. Shes 5 now and I was going to take her to a stud last season but it was bad timing for me with starting a new job etc. I'm a bit worried about mating her next season in case shes getting too old. I would never want to put her health at risk.
She had her first litter when she was 3years, three puppies a quick and easy birth with no complications! I still want another litter, I want a boy to show. Is it still safe to breed her at this age or is 6 too old?
Just wanted other people's thoughts really as I thought 5 was pushing it a little?!

Yes i think 6 is to old, 5 as you said is pushing it really. Let her chill out now, shes already had a litter! x

I would say 6 is a little too old. I would retire her gracefully, and if you want a boy to show, but a pup from someone else.

I would deffinately stop at 5 if not 4, thats when problems start accuring, if you are going to stop breeding think about spaying as she has had pups and it can take its toll and lead to medical problems later in life.

Yes, I agree with that. Sorry, I know you'll be disappointed, but you have to think of your bitch & her health.

Ah well thats that isn't it!
I'm not going to buy another pup as need to continue the line so I will wait until my best friend decides to breed my girl's daughter in a year or so. I was going to breed the pup which I kept but think she'll be a rubbish mum!!
I won't be having her spayed though, we'll have to take our chances with associated medical probs! I don't believe in getting your dog fixed.

Your choice. I probably wouldn't either!
Why do you think your younger bitch would be a rubbish mum?

Can't see any problem with it as long as she's fit and healthy , she's only had 1 litter and hasn't been used as a breeding machine.

I would say she is just too old but sometimes the ones that you think will not be good as a mother suprise you and are fantastic so give it a go with her daughter ?

Kc won't register a litter once the bitch has reached 8yrs old, unless prior permission has been granted.lolalollypop wrote:depends if you wanted to reg the pups as kc recomend breeding stops at five thats why we just had the one litter of esme when she was four then had her done....if your keeping the pups though and shes only had one litter id say its up too you m8

Re: Oldest to breed a bitch?
I'm not sure, she probably will turn out as a fantastic mum shes just so immature at the moment mentally! And where Skibadee was such an amazing mother and produced such great pups I just wanted a repeat litter really.
But for continuation of my line I guess it does make sense to breed a litter from her daughter and keep a pup from that litter. Think dad is going to be 'Maxsta Hot Shot' (Vinnie), he fits perfectly into my idea of an almost-perfect stafford. I like em small and compact with a big grin and not too bully head.
What do other think about this pairing, lets say if I bred him with my younger bitch in a year's time.

Re: Oldest to breed a bitch?
He looks a nice dog, though you can't see everything from a pic. Have you seen him close up?
The pics of your girl's a little fuzzy, but she looks a nice type, and would suit a smaller stud like him.
Her being immature really doesn't come into it - they very often become settled & mature with a litter, and you can always keep a close eye on her for the 1st couple of days though you probably won't need to.
If you really want another litter, then I'd go for the daughter rather than the mother.

Re: Oldest to breed a bitch?
Its not so much that I think Tali will be a bad mum, just that Skibadee was so great and her pups just what I wanted! I have seen Vinnie when he was younger at shows he's a lovely little guy. I like to use a stud the same size/smaller than the bitch to reduce possibility of whelping issues.
My website hasn't been updated for a year so all these photos are so out of date. Tali's filled out so much since then, i will get some new photos up if it kills me!
