Random idiot grabs my dogs collar
I'd like peoples opinions on this. In the park lastnight with a bunch of regulars, owners and dogs. A passer by stopped to chat to us. His dogs were fine, but he was an idiot.
5 mins before i started recording he was the stereotypical 'i dont like staffys' kind of guy. He goes to get stick from floyd then says, im not putting my hand down there, and u can hear guy in background saying he is quite safe, then they start to wind him up saying dont look him in the eye etc, just having a laugh. Floyd is not possessive with toys or food. So to get the stick he grabs floyds collar and jerks him back, im sure it did NOT hurt or freak my dog out BUT... is this anyway to make first contact with a dog? He hadnt previously said hello to it or petted him but he felt it ok to suddenly surprise grab his collar... WTF!! IF floyd was aggressive and he turned round and bit him then it would make my dog look bad. He then throws stick and shouts fight, fight, fight, i mean seriously, this guy was total ****** lol
I may be over protective of my wee pup who is only 10 months old but i would never dream of grabbing a strangers dog by the collar like this

I'm sorry now if I do offend anyone but that guy was just being a tw@. I would keep away from him in future if I were you. He was just trying to wind you up as well as your dog. Just keep away from him, he wants to cause trouble.

Re: Random idiot grabs my dogs collar
The chap seems friendly enough even if a bit of an idiot in grabbing a strange dog. I dont see that he meant anything really. Was just a bit in your face. Seems quite a nice atmosphere there. At our park everyone keeps an eye out for all the dogs and will step in if a dog is behaving badly. (Not that anyone seems to be here)

I have too say if someone grabbed any of my dog collars and pulled them back like that they would not ever do it again thats for sure, what a jumped up knob seiously i cannt stand people like that. i would stay well clear of him or tell him whats what.

Re: Random idiot grabs my dogs collar
I agree with Kathy - I'd keep clear of him. Acting like that, he's likely to cause trouble. Idiot.
I would never step in if someone else's dog is behaving badly unless it directly involved my own dog. Asking for trouble.
If someone did that to Dempsey they would likely get a very severe growl warning.

I wouldn't have been happy about that either. At our park we also look after each others dogs if they are getting out of line. It's a group of 8-10 people though and the dogs have all known everyone for quite awhile.

TBH I wouldn't socialise with people like that unless they were friends. Too many odd people about now days Xx

They are mostly friends. Some of them came to our last dog's funeral and they have all helped train Suki.

Re: Random idiot grabs my dogs collar
Are you sure he was being serious about not liking Staffs? If he was, then he's even more of an idiot for dragging a random dog (that he believes is aggressive) back while he gets the stick. Seems like a stupid thing to do with any dog you don't know. Not to mention, I'm sure the dragging him back didn't hurt the dog at all, but that seemed so very over-the-top. What an idiot :\

Tell him next time he grabs your dogs collar again, he'll find the dog lead wrapped around his neck with you dragging him back wards
Edited to say i am a nice person really, its just idiots * me off and one of the reasons i steer clear of other dog walkers.

Re: Random idiot grabs my dogs collar
Thanks for the feedback guys, its good to know im not the only one who wanted to punch his lights out, i was more angry at myself when i got home and watched the clip, for not saying something! wish i had!
I wouldnt have minded if one of the regular guys yanked his collar like that if he was out of hand, in a scuffle or humping but a stranger having first contact like that with a young dog is seriously wrong.
They are a great bunch and the group of dogs have taught mine very well like how to behave in a pack, whats acceptable and whats not, how to meet and greet other dogs etc etc.
Thankfully he was only in the area to walk his mothers dog, his dog was the brown patterdale and the sable german sherpard was his mums, they were perfect dogs, they entered the pack and allowed every one to sniff and assess then had a sniff them selfs then they were running about playing and chasing, perfect examples of well socialised dogs, pity they couldnt teach idiot denim man how to behave in a new social group !
dogs 1 humans 0 lol

Omg, there was no need to grab his collar like that !!!!
Crikey thats the kinda action owners do when they are pulling their dog off or away from something , not over a bloody stick !

This is the bit that gets me going as the twit of a bloke has got hold of the coller and your staffy had nipped at him your staffy would just be another nasty staffy , but the guy is already giving of bad vibes before he goes for the coller , you staffy has just shown how mature calm and well behaved he is let's see what would of happened if another breed of dog was in that situation

Like you I am a nice person, but this is just what I would have done the video is not showing for me, so I am going by what you have written. And like Caryll says, I wouldnt get involved with any other dog unless it was messing with my dog too.

I have to agree with all of the above, if someone grabbed Zeus like that from his collar I'd go nuts. I don't even do that to him, unless hes been really naughty, and that's only been a handful of times since I've had him!

Re: Random idiot grabs my dogs collar
I've only ever man handled one persons dog over the park, and the person after wards thanked me.
I was over the park with one of mine as a pup for a bit of socializing, as you do you get use to seeing the same dogs and faces and you start going round in doggie walking groups.
Well on this day a new owner joined us with her new stafford pup which was about 6mths old.
It was a cocky little * as you could tell as it came over.
Any way the owners to busy gas bagging and not watching what her dog was upto or even noticing its body language.
Me my eyes are fixed on my dog at all times, and i noticed the way this pup was with one smaller dog, they only way i can describe it is you knew this dog was just about to kick off with this other one. At which point i just grabbed the stafford pup and picked it up into the air, just as it was about to jump on the other.
Its owner heard the snarl from hers looked round to see me carrying her dog

I've not watched the vid (at work) but if someone did that to Vin i'd have gone mental, If someone did that to Bella she'd have probably bit them (fear aggressive but getting better)
You don't know the dog why on earth would you just grab hold of the collar

Re: Random idiot grabs my dogs collar
I had to watch it with no sound (laska ate my speaker wires). his body language says it all tbh, he's fallen foul to the myth about staffies but doesnt want to be seen to be afraid of them in front of new people. unfortunatly for him you can clearly see he's scared with sharp movements and holding hands out of the way all the time..
He's an idiot for 1/ approaching a dog he has never met before from behind and 2/ grabbing its collar behind its head, and then to lift it back and jerk his hand in front of it...words fail me. it breaks just about every rule of making contact with a dog. had your dog been of the nervouse type the outcome could have been quite different, as it was restrained and thefore its flight option removed it would have only one option left. and who would have got the blame...

I agree with Lynne, I think he was more inappropriate than malicious. No boundaries-also pretty stupid approaching a strange dog like that.
I would have been angry too though if someone did that to Callie. Just imagine the reaction if he'd done something like that to someones child at a playground.
Glad you have nice dog park friends Lynne and jstaff...something I'd like to get into.

Re: Random idiot grabs my dogs collar
firstly
i wouldn't have been able to hold my tongue if he grabbed my dog like that. as pointed out, if ever there was a wrong way to approach a dog and man handle it, this is it!! also had the dog snapped it would've been another black mark against staffs.
second i too feel after watching that.
his smart answer, i have no doubt, would've been something along the lines of "what? that won't hurt him" or "he's only a dog"
and if it did bite him i would've said "well how would you like it if someone you don't know came behind you and grabbed you by the back of the neck?"
idiot.

Wow, what a jumped up as*hole!! Totally with you, would not be happy if someone grabbed my dog like that. You could see that your boy just wanted to play with his stick, the others were chasing him, he was just minding his own business. Jeez people make me mad, he's got some cheek! The worst part is, if your dog had gone back at him he would have been labelled "aggressive" because idiot's like this are such cowards!
