Bones
Was just doing a search on 'bones' as I'd like to give Ralph a raw bone as a treat sometimes. I came accross this post https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t2909-what-type-of-bone-from-the-butchers?highlight=BONE
Just wanted to ask, I'd given him one of those shrink wrapped ham bones (I think) from the pet shop, but although he was only chewing on it for about an hour or so, he had the terrible runs afterwards for about 2 days. It’s the only thing he had that was different from what he normally eats and his poo is normally fine.
Question is, do you think a raw bone will have the same effect on him? Or because it’s raw will it be ok? Is he still too young for a raw bone? And from reading the above post, I’m asking for a ‘beef marrow bone’ is that right? Sorry – I don’t buy meat so I don’t know what I’m asking for! And ask for it to be sawn, not chopped!
And freeze it for a couple of days first?
I think I read in one part knuckle is ok, but then in another part that they break teeth!
Help!

Re: Bones
I won't give those bones from the pet stores as they're all cooked & can splinter really badly. I always give raw.
I'd say that Ralph is a little too young for a marrow bone, yet. If you have a Morrisons supermarket near you, you can ask their butcher if they have any lamb spines - they're a little softer & easier for a pup to chew.
A marrow bone is very rich, and some dogs' stomachs just can't take it.

Re: Bones
Thanks Caryll. I can see Morrison's from my office window... I shall go and have a word with the butcher.
Just out of interest, how old would you say is ok before you start giving bones?

Re: Bones
I do the beef upper leg bones (not sure what they are called).
I gave one to Loki and Maska on Sunday. I also give them raw, cooked bones are nothing less than a hazzard. I just asked the butcher to cut most of the fat of, dont want the doggies munching on too much fat.
Here is a link to some pics I posted of the dogs with their bones.

Re: Bones
We just ask our local butcher for any beef bones/knuckles.
We usually end up with 2 bags full for a £1

Re: Bones
No luck with Morrisons. Apparently they don't do the lamb spines there. I'll nip into a few other butchers on my travels, I see there's been some more ideas which is perfect. Thank you!
