A delivery of RAW food
We have some great articles and posts on feeding RAW food to our dogs on this site, so I thought I would add a few pics of my own. I didn't want to post on Ella's post. It's a great post and can be found clicking on the link below:-
https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t19197-what-s-in-the-bowl-today-graphic-photos-raw?highlight=whats+in+the+bowl
Here is a typical delivery of some RAW meat.
I feed Blue normally bones in the morning (lamb ribs, chicken wings, chicken carcus, duck wings, turkey necks etc)
and meat in the evening. (Hearts, Liver, Kidney, Tripe etc)
First I ordered 30lbs of hearts Which looks like this when delivered froozen.
To make things easier for me I measure them out into meal sizes. For Blue at the moment it's about 350g. Don't worry if it's not spot on, your just trying to get it to average out over the month. So some meals will be bigger, some will be smaller.
I use freezer bags to seperate meals. I find this easier for me as it prevents all the meat sticking together, which you will see an example of below with chicken and also it is easier for me to see how many meals Blue has of each food so I know what to order next time.
In this order I got 41 evening meals of hearts from 30lbs. Which works out about 54p per meal.
Here is a pic of 5lbs of tripe. Again measured into about 350g portions. This works out at 43p per meal
Lamb Ribs. They are a good size so I will normally only give 1 for a morning meal. This worked out at 35p per meal.
Here is how the chicken arrives All stuck together. This is prevented by seperating once it has de-frosted a little then putting into freezer bags in meal portions. For me 3 chicken wings or 1 chicken carcus is enough for a morning meal.
Chciken wings before
After working out at 32p per meal
Chciken carcus stuck together when it's delivered
After its seperated. This works out at about 32p per meal
Hope this has given you some idea of some meals you can feed your dog on RAW and an idea of how much it will cost

Re: A delivery of RAW food
Thank you.
At the moment I am getting mine from Landywoods.
http://www.landywoods.co.uk/price_list.html
Says call for prices, so not sure if they are in the middle of updating them.
Some members also order from here
http://www.daf-petfood.co.uk/wb/
If you call them they will email you a price list. I found DAF have more varity but you have to order £50 worth min. When it comes you will see how much storage you will need. I have a good size chest freezer and for me to order that much it would have to be nearly empty before I order, which is too risky for my liking. They deliver once a month.
Landywoods has a min order of £30 and they deliver to my area every 2 weeks.
There are plenty more suppliers also available. You may be able to get most from a good butcher or chinese market.

Re: A delivery of RAW food
Hi, cheers, I will check the links. I only have a wee freezer now.
I buy Stella's meat in Sainsbury's and Morrison's now - normal meat for people, and lamb hearts from local butcher when he orders them for me, so anything else will be better
Thanks, Xx

Re: A delivery of RAW food
I use to feed onyx raw food, not anywhere close to what you use. I used k9 kravings. I simply couldn't store 30lbs of food in the freezer anymore. My wife needed the room for food for ourselves. I think onyx weighed at the most 34lbs.
FOllowing changing him over to EVO, within. Few weekf you could see the shoulder and leg development quickly. I'm happy with the kibble, but if I had the space I would have stayed raw
Two thumbs up dude

Re: A delivery of RAW food
Forgot to mention. Once the food is frozen and I'm ready to use it I will take the freezer bag which contains one portion out of the freezer and place in the fridge 24 hours before using. So as soon as I have give Blue his breakfast I will get tomorrows breakfast out and put it in the fridge to begin to defrost. I use plastic tubs as shown below. This is handy and stops your fridge getting messed up. Once the meat starts to defrost blood may drain out of the bag. The plastic tubs collect the blood instead of your fridge being covered in it

If you have a freezer to store the food then you can start by looking at both of these companies.

Re: A delivery of RAW food
Great informative post - thank you
Landywood's have had 'call' written on their prices for several months now - I mailed them earlier for a price list -
I've been buying from a local pet warehouse ( we only have one butcher) , and tbh their prices aren't much worse than Durham/DAF (who I've ordered from) - just not much variety. P@H are mainly minces - not chunks and their variety is limited too with high prices!
Durham will cost approx 60p per day for Taz - cheaper and better (IMHO) than the best quality kibbles on the market.

If you have freezer space check out the sites already mentioned, failing that, do you have a Sainsbury's nearby ? - they sell 2.5kg basics frozen chicken portions (mixed drumsticks, wings, breasts with bone & skin) for £4.00

Re: A delivery of RAW food
I am new to Staffies, having had Dobermanns in the past, but have found my lovely 8 month old boy to be quite fussy - he likes variety! I have never fed a completely raw diet before but am considering it.
Just to clarify - do you just feed a chunk of raw meat once or twice a day, and nothing else?
And what about the chicken bones - I always thought they were dangerous?

No it's not just a chunk of meat it's feeding meat, bones and offal. My boys are fed once a day and yes they get nothing else apart from their raw food
Chicken bones are fine to feed if raw
Have a look at these for guidance

Re: A delivery of RAW food
Thank you Ella, I've had a quick look at the links you kindly provided and will revisit them.
Your dogs look the picture of health and are obviously enjoying their food. I would also (obviously) to have my Staff to be perfectly healthy (poo less often! that sounds a plus in itself) and to ENJOY his food and not have to eat it just because he's hungry and there's nothing else on offer, so I am very tempted.
Perhaps I will try buying a bag of mixed chicken bits from Sainsburys as suggested earlier and see how we get on.

Re: A delivery of RAW food
No worries, if you do decide to feed a complete raw diet then the key is to go slow and not add new foods in too quick

Re: A delivery of RAW food
Hi Ella, thank you for your input. You say "go slow, and not introduce new foods in too quick".
When I have changed foods for my 8 month old pup, I have followed this by mixing some of the "old" food into some of the "new food" for a few feeds, which is easy with dry and/or wet foods.
But how does one do this with some raw chicken wings or ribs of lamb? I know that if I put some of his "normal" Bakers Meaty Chunks in with some raw chicken wings or whatever, the "normal" food will be ignored completely and my pup will concentrate entirely on the raw food. Or do I alternate meals?
I have to add here how helpful you Ella, and Carryl, and many others have been so kind and supportive in replying to my various recent questions about my relatively new Staffie member of my family. Staffie-bull-terrier.niceboard is a truly great website with so many many helpful and interesting posts and Staffie people are the most friendly people in dogdom.

Re: A delivery of RAW food
When people swap to a full raw diet they tend to switch cold turkey. So they fast the afternoon before and then straight on to raw the following morning.
When i say go slow when adding other foods, i mean do a week of chicken and then if stools are good and no belly issues add in say turkey and so on.
Have a look at this site for explaining starting a raw diet
www.preymodelraw.com
It has a guide at the top explaining when to add new food and how much
