what is in a name?

I'm interested to find out if anyone has stories behind naming their Staffies

I'll start. I'm a petrol head so I named Meiko after British rally driver Kris Meeke. Outside the racing community I think he's best known for the Peugeot 307 advert on the tv "Meeke not mild"

I named lexi lexi because when i got her there was a car dealership right beside the house and it was "Lexus" and i liked it lol

Moo was a rescue called Missy, just got shortened to Moo which is fitting of her

Tilly we called so after a big family discussion and it was the only one we could agree on . Tommy was named so in memory of the OH Grandad (John Cooper)

And lastly by doing this (as I've joked before) there used to be a kids TV programme called Tots TV , Tilly , Tom and Tiny ??? so we still have room for Tiny ??

Rocky is from a rescue centre and was already named Rocky. We decided not to change it as he had enough upset as it was with new home etc. Didn't want to add to his confusion.

Marley because he was so laid back when i first met him. at the time I must have been about the only person not to have seen the film "marley and me" and people are forever asking me if thats why he got his name.
Laska is a name I've used for one of my pet Rats many years ago, It means "love" in Czech.

i just thought it seemed appropriate for a staffy, and she seems to suit it well

The resuce called her Kya afte a car registration but I called her Lily after my lovely mum-in-law and also the main character in one of my favourite book "The Secret Life of Bees"

Suki is easy to say in English and Japanese. It also means loving one in Japanese.

We chose names with meaning.
Maska means "strong one" in Navejo Indian, and Loki was named after the Norse god of michief and trickery (among many of the traits) and it is really apt, because if you can't see her or hear her, you just know she is up to no good
I know Loki is a male name, but I can't be bothered with gender.

When we got Skye her pedigree name was dotty blue she nearly had the name dotty but after a few names were thrown around we chose Skye
Busters name was boss but after being with us for a few hours we decided buster suited him better as he is no boss

We named Ralph because when we went to see him, he was barking at us when we stopped playing with him, and I said 'Ralph the mouth'! it stuck from there.

We named our girl Diesel as her mum was also called Diesel!
Our boy we named Tank, cause we are hoping he will be built like one lol and Diesel n Tank kinda make sence lol

bullseye was off a film, but its bulley for short, suits him really. and Major was named because my uncle who owned him was in the police force,

Zeus because its a strong/manly name which he hopefully will look like when hes all grown up! The God of God's! >

Its that staffy smile, the first pic I saw of George as he was then I thought he looked like the Joker he also wasn't reacting to a single syllable name so it seemed fitting to name him after Heath Ledger

Romeo was called so because the year before i got him i had had a really horrible time with an EX, and then i had had a string of very unsucsessful relationships and i really needed a romantic loving little man in my life.. so i have my hairy little red head now
Romeo was almost called Oaka or Remi

Aww he gorgeous! don't look much of a Zeus now (so cute) but I'm sure he will turn out to be one!

Maisy was already named and as we were her forth owners in 11 months we kept it
Scooby was called tupac, there was no way I was calling him that, we wanted something fun so the kids named him.scooby doo n it suits him

Rolo.... came about because of his colour. Chocolate and caramel. It suited his sweet nature

Saffy is actually Sapphire officially and on paper etc. She's named that because her mum is called Diamond. So really I should call her Sapphy!? Ha ha

The blue cross named Pixee, so we kept that name rather than mess her about, however I often call her girl cos she is such a gorgous girl

Ty was Tyson is rescue but he cowered at his name :-( He was fine with Ty tho so we kept it at that. Kaos was Kaos coz he was and still is chaos lol

Brilliant stories! I wanted something non threatening because of the Staffies reputation. Originally his name was Jack but it never suited him

Trouble is because when we first got him in the car my daughter was holding him and as my hubby was driving him home he tried to climb all over him with excitemnent ...my daughter then said " oh know what have we done , here comes trouble " and from then on it stuck

My mum got a german shepard a week or 2 before I was born called Blue. He sadly passed away in my teens and will always hold a special place in my heart.
I got my staff called Kenzie. I nipped the shop and when I come back the kids said they didn't like the name and could they call him Blue. Never told my kids about Blue so I thought it was a sign. Was an easy choice to make, so Blue it is

the rescue center called our pooch michael, which to me was just not a good dog name (didnt feel right shouting it in a field) after much name discussions my other half wanted sparticus and me being a MASSIVE buffy the vampire slayer i liked spike, i guess i won that particular discussion !!! lol !

sadly chloe was already named when we got her...and as she was originally a foster i didnt see the need to change it...(she didnt know her name). if i knew i was gonna keep her id have changed it! dont really like human type names for dogs lol!

my dogs name Bauer comes from my fav tv show 24 Jack Bauer and my other dog Pilot gets his name from cockney charlie who was one of the first people to take our breed to the usa.

Frank was named after Frank Gallagher from Shameless .... lets face it who doesnt love the rugged and rough Frank ... or the guy from Shameless! lol
Tara was a rescue so she come with her name already but she pretty much just gets called Taz now because she responses better to that.

Although when they are being cute (or I want a cuddle) its always Baba (Frank) and My Princess (Tara) and they come cozy in lol x

Dora was the nickname that that the breeders family had given her. They had young children and obviously watched Dora the explorer - lol! Apparently she kept leaving her bed and exploring the kitchen

We let our daughter name our dog, she chose Spike, the bulldog off Tom and Jerry.

We called ours Skye after our favourite place on the planet... and also because our last dog has his ashes scattered there too

Im a huge boxing fan so i named Cassius after the great Muhammad Ali, he was nearly called Sonny after Sonny liston.

Marcellus - is another cool name (Ali's middle name).

agreed, some great reasons for names.

My partner and I had been looking at names before we when to get our pup and Blaze stood out to us, So when I phoned the guy asking him what the pup looked like he said, He is red with white chest and a we Blaze of white down his nose so this sealed it for us. My last two dogs were Butch and Bud so the letter B seems to be an occurring thing with my dogs

Biscuit was named at the rescue centre by one of the other workers, she was originally Cookie because she was the colour of cookie dough, but we had a staffy named Cookie already, and they used to joke that she came from the broken biscuit factory because she was a bit messed up initially bless her! She has all sorts of names though.. she gets called Biscy Boo, Bug, Bubba, Monkey and Chunk haha! She'll respond to anything said in a high pitched tone..

As I adopted Nike at 9 I wouldn't dare change her name! It's not what I would have called her if I had had her as a puppy but it suits her due to her white markings Nike aka sweetheart, angel, sweet cheeks, wiggle bum, honey etc

When we got Skye her kc name was dotty blue but I didn't fancy calling out dotty in the park so cause she was blue we went through so many names and in the end we said Skye and she tipped her head we did it several times and it stuck although she normally gets called piggy or munch
Buster was originally called boss but he was so scared of everything boss just didn't suit and so as I liked the name buster we decided it would be but again he gets called buzzy mr munch and a few others I don't think I need to mention lol

we called Beau after 2 weeks of getting him, we looked at many names,
american Indian names or any to do with blue, but ended up with beau meaning dandy man, handsome, or male admirer.

We rehomed des from battersea and he was already named des then. We kept it because it suits him and when he's naughty he's Desmond :-)

Called vinnie after our favourite actor vinnie jones lol xD his original name was shadow but it didnt suit him really he was too cute and sweet! Not that vinnie jones is but meh. >
