"Eye Bogies" Empty "Eye Bogies"

Post by Jellytot Sat Jul 28 2012, 10:22

In the morning, Ralph has quiet gooey and green "eye bogies" as I call them!!

His eyes look ok, maybe a bit pink, but to be fair, I couldn't say if they were pinker than normal.

A friend suggested that it may be due to pollen, as we are out in the country and he walks throug long grass etc.

What are your thoughts? He's not due back at vets for another 8 weeks, should I keep an eye (pardon the punn) or make a sooner appointment.

Our English Bulldog had a similar issue that turned out to be an issue with the eyelid trying to turn in on itself. We ended up having to apply an ointment everyday for quite awhile. No experience in this area with a Staff though espically not at 5 months of age.

Could be an infection maybe conjunctivitus (sp).

If its only in the morning I wouldn't be too concerned but if it persists and isn't normal then the vets for a quick check up, you can never be too carfull with eyes Xx

Have you tried to rinse them with some cooled boiled water with a little salt added. Just apply with a small cottonwool ball, clean one for each eye.

If it continues best to seek advice from the vet.

Our 2 both get snotty eyes on a morning , more like a whitey , yellowey gunge and a couple of times this week during the day after we have been to the beach so just think its the tearducts doing there job an dcleaning out the muck. If you get a constant build up through the day then it should be a trip to the vets (Tilly has had this problem a couple of times and a weeks worth of eye ointment normally clears it up)

I think it may very well be due to pollen at the moment. They can also have a problem with the eyelids/lashes curliing inwards and causing irritation but I suspect this would have surfaced before now. Tyson did have such issues and we needed to have the offending hairs plucked out by the vet every few months but it seems to have resolved itself now. There is a lot of dry grass around here at the moment and I do find more 'eye snot' when we have been walking in the veld (fields).

My boy gets them most mornings, we wipe his eyes with cold black tea, contains tannin so helps to clear eye infections... obviously if symptoms persist mention it to the vet! But it certainly helps his eyes.

T bags are good eye fixers , used to get told to hold 2 teabags over my eyes for arc eye (welding flash)

That's brilliant. Thank you all. I have been wiping then with cool boiled water just to clean them. Hadn't thought about putting a bit of salt in there though. The tea bag sounds a good idea too.

Thank you all. Will keep a close eye on them.
