Olympics
I'm really looking forward to them starting. I really enjoy the Summer Olympics. Is anyone going to see any of the events in person?

Re: Olympics
Nope, too far for me to swim, but I'll watch as much as I can.

Re: Olympics
Far too expensive to go to and to get to.
Really finding it difficult to get excited about it all to be honest. It just looks like a huge waste of money to me. Considering we are still in a very deep depression in this country at the moment the money could have been better spent elsewhere.

The olympics has never been my thing. I know it costs allot to set up etc. May be wrong but I think hosting an olympics generates more than it costs.

Re: Olympics
The event should generate much more money than it costs espically with increased tourism and full hotels.

This time they reckon that it'll be an overall loss. Individuals (including thieves & pickpockets) will make a profit, but the country overall will make a loss.

I don't think the host country has ever posted a loss. Of course anytime you have alot of tourists the crime rate will spike though.

Re: Olympics
It's a bit of bad timing too, right now we are hearing about hospitals that are being closed down and going into administration, not good

My mum is super excited! Off to an Olympics party thing tonight and 2 of my friends have been volunteering there
I can take it or leave it, as long as it doesn't upset Eastenders

i read somewhere they going to make around 18billion from it the other day so they could make double what they paid for it.

That's strange, because only a few days ago the government said that due to the bad economic climate they won't even cover the set-up costs, and will probably be millions out of pocket!
Individuals may make money out of it, but that won't cover the cost of putting the thing on. A complete waste of money.

Re: Olympics
i cant see the government losing money with all the money they going make on tax, public transport and so on.
Re: Olympics
When the bid was first put together we weren't in a recession.
They're not going to make enough to cover it. They've already said so! Most of the transport is for the officials & athletes & doesn't generate any money at all, but they've had to pay the bus companies huge sums to run them.
Tourism may bring in some money, but most of that will go to private enterprise. Yes, that'll be taxed and I daresay london transport will be busier, but it just isn't enough to cover the set-up and running costs.

Re: Olympics
if they make the 18billions they was talking about then it will be well worth it for the uk economy.

But that's the thing, the government have recently stated that they won't even cover their costs, let alone make 18billion!
It's a white elephant - by the time they realised they didn't want it, it was too late to do anything about it!

Re: Olympics
i have not seen this when the government as state they going loses money i have only seen that olympics will make 18billion for the uk economy surely is a good thing?
Re: Olympics
It depends on whose pockets the money will go into! If it's private enterprise then no, it'll do the country very little good at all.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-Olympics. I just think that we should never have put in the bid to host it; once we had & it had been accepted it was too late to pull out, we were stuck with it.

Re: Olympics
that type of money is going keep people in jobs that they may of lost it if we didn't get it.
Re: Olympics
But will it? Once the rush of the two weeks is over, most of the 'created' jobs will finish. Everyone who's been taken on for the olympics will be looking for jobs again.
If the business isn't there, it doesn't matter how much a business owner has made over the previous few months, the staff will be laid off.

Re: Olympics
We had similar discussions when SA hosted the Soccer World Cup. Can say that the estimated profits were not realised but the Nation building value was priceless. I know it is a very different situation as it is a single sport. But still required immense expense building stadia and infrastructure. The spirit here for the duration was tangible and it was an awesome experience.
Just wait for the first British Gold Medal win. I am sure the excitement will start to rise.
I will be watching the OC, looking forward to the Gymnastics, swimming, rowing and of course Track & Field.

I think it will be good for the economy. People will spend money and even if jobs are temporary it will generate income for people who weren't making any money and help businesses generate revenue in the short term.
