Post by MissDebbie Mon Jul 16 2012, 20:53

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum and new to Stafford ownership (even though Alfie is actually my brothers...not mine! Rolling Eyes ) I have two other dogs, a Collie X Whippet and a Patterdale Terrier, and work with dogs so lots of dog experience. Wanted to join the forum to get some specific information so I can help my brother with Alfie, as he is his first dog (we live in the same house though...!)

Anyway, Alfie moved in yesterday after being given up by his old owners. The couple split up and the woman couldn't cope with Alfie and a baby. He is 10 months old, apparently, but very big! Here he is:

Hi & welcome.

He's a beauty. Are you sure he's 10 months? In that pic he looks a bit older.

Post by MissDebbie Mon Jul 16 2012, 21:08

I was told 10 months, however putting my maths skills to the test, I think he may be older. The owners said he was born in September, but due a booster in September...which makes no sense when I think about it! So if I am correct he is more likely 13 months.....

Not sure if my maths is right though, it was never my strong point Smile

My brother is quite nervous about the whole dog ownership thing, he is 28 years old and although been around animals all his life (thanks to me) he has never had his own pet. What advice should I give him? I've spoken to him about diet, exercise etc. but really want to encourage him to do some training with him (maybe obedience or agility). What do you think?

Absolutely! It's a good way to socialise the dog & learn to control him with distractions around you!

Have a look to see if there are any training clubs in your area (sorry, I don't know where you are so I can't sugest any) and pop along to have a look.

Definitely organise some obedience classes, when I was 17 we got our 2nd BC and as I drove and had time I took him and it was great and some real good lessons and bonding time. All the agility stuff etc can come later but training is a must especially with a staff as they are a very strong minded breed

I work in a dog day care, so Alfie came along today for a play. He loved it, and was fab with all the other dogs. He is now completely zonked!! I attend agility classes so can take my bro and Alfie along, and my boss is an obedience trainer. The only problem is my brother is quite shy, so I plan to teach him some things first and hopefully get him along for classes when he sees what they can achieve together Smile

the dog will help your brother no end with his shyness , specially a few walks with the cute dog that everyone wants to say hello too. Obedience must come before agility though Smile

I was out yesterday with Tommy and the amount of people that want to come and say hello was unbelievable because he's cute , it's like taking a baby for a walk, and that is confidence buidling for both of them Big Grin

Thanks. Yeah I agree, upon working it out I think he's more likely 13 months.

Hi guys, I'm Andy, the OP's brother. thumbs up

Any advice is hugely appreciated, so be prepared for plenty of questions over the coming months haha.

Anyway, Debbie has got a couple of things wrong. shame on you I'm 29 and she has definitely overstated the shyness part lol nice to meet you all.
