Feeding two dogs
I need some advice please. This is the first time owning two dogs at the same time, and I am not quite sure how to train them so they eat out of their own bowls.
Maska is pretty good, he eats his food, but obviously with Loki being a pup she eats a lot slower, when she is not being side-tracked. She is constantly walking over to Maska's bowl and stealing some of his food, and when he is done, he wants to stick his face in her food. I have to stand between them when they eat to keep them both at their own bowls. I have tried feeding them separately, but then they dont want to eat.
They each know their own bowl, because before i give them their food they have to sit, and they always end up sitting in front of their own bowls, its just keeping each to their own when they eat. At least there is no food aggression, so that is not a problem.
Any suggestions will do, as i dont want either of them over- or under eating, or trying to eat each other's food. I have even tried swopping the bowls to trick them, but they still want to see what is happening in the other bowl

Re: Feeding two dogs
If they won't eat seperatley have you tried putting the bowls on the opposite end of the room so there is some distance between them?

Yeah, I have. Loki will still try and run over to Maska's bowl. I have to literally stand next to her when she eats so I can stop her. She is a really stubbourn pup, and gets distreacted quite easily.

Re: Feeding two dogs
You just have to do as you're doing - stand in between them and block if one tries to get to the other one's bowl. They should get it eventually
It's a good idea to supervise feeding times anyway as food can often be the cause of a scuffle even if there's never been one previously.

Janey - it is kind of funny, especially if you could see what Loki does. She really is a little monster

Re: Feeding two dogs
I've always fed seperately or at least firmly supervised. If they had to eat in the same room I'd stand between them.

Re: Feeding two dogs
We need to sort out our feeding times better as Tommy feeds more often than Tilly and at different times, so he will go diving to Tilly's bowl when she is eating , Tilly looks left out when Tommy is getting one of his other meals, can't win

Re: Feeding two dogs
This is very difficult especially as alot of us use dry food which is left down abit longer so much easier for them too steal each others I have always had two dogs at different age, i would give pups 1st feed when my adult was still snoring lol, i feed them in seperate rooms with the door closed, i am not too strict about it but give them a good amount of time too eat their own food and when they have both had their fill they will go too each others bowls, but once they realise they have the same they soon get bored, then i take it up x

Re: Feeding two dogs
My two are fed next to each other and they just lie down and wait until the other is finished

Re: Feeding two dogs
When I feed my 2 at the moment I stand between them but as with my gsds they eventually ate at the same rate so both fin at the same time
Even then they were always at other ends of the room and I would at least be in the same room supervising them
It takes time but keep doing what your doing

Re: Feeding two dogs
My 2 are fed next to each other, Diesel will just walk away when she's finished but puppy Tank will shove his piggy face in Diesels bowl straight after he's finished.
Once or twice Diesel has growled when Tank went near her bowl and she got a swift telling off for that and I took her bowl away, not gonna get into that with her. Since then she's been good as gold.
I would always supervise from a distance tbh.
