Probably right but I am just pretending that he saw a squirrel or cat instead. Mine go all splayed 'cause they want a snack...

Re: Arnold Swartistaffy
Whats so wrong about it? The dogs just super-fit. And the stance is the same one Skibadee does when she sees a cat! I like to keep my dogs fit, I've never got enough time any more to walk them as much as I would like but people tell me my dogs are too thin. I just ignore them!

Just my opinion but I think the people that dislike it think it helps further a bad sterotype. I understand the opinion but I think it is a good thing for a dog to be very fit. It shows the handlers pay alot of attention to nutrition and exercise which are the keys to having a good companion.

Re: Arnold Swartistaffy
On the one hand I would be worried WHY a dog needs to be that shredded...but on the other, you can't say the dogs not healthy, fed well or looked after because it is in top athlectic condition. That must take dedication.
It's just worrying thinking about the methods used to get it to that point and also to maintain it.

Re: Arnold Swartistaffy
I think that in general they all want to exercise as much as possible. If we let Suki she would exercise most of the day. If done correctly a well conditioned dog will be healthier and live longer just like humans. Plus a tired dog that has a job to do is a good dog

Got nothing to do with steriotype. And I agree with you 100% that a dog should be fit and well exercised, it shows care and devotion to the well-being of your beloved pet, but I just think there is a difference between fit and over-the-top.
The pics of Mayja, Lexi and Tali are great, but they don't look anything like the first pic. They just look more natural.
Sorry, not wanting to step on anybody's toes, but I think it remains a personal preference, and how much you are willing to do to get your dog looking like that.

Ledger would also run all day if I had the energy to keep up with him, I recently changed his food to Pero which I believe is slightly higher protein and he has definitely bulked out a bit and yet stayed quite lean and defined I don't think it would be too much work for him to start to look 'ripped' when the muscle was under tension as in the OP pic

Agreed, Suki is quite muscular but look normal in most pics but if caught at just the right moment looks a bit ripped. Muscle under stress look quite different than it does when relaxed.

Fully stressed

Although Suki is in no where near the condition the dog in the pic is in.

Re: Arnold Swartistaffy
I don't see what the problem is personally. I hate to see overweight and unfit dogs and as so many are, it's refreshing to see a fit, lean dog.
I don't think the dog is the first picture is that much more muscled than Mayja in the picture Denise posted, it's just his stance and the fact all his muscles are tense that makes him apear to be.

Brilliant muscle definition anyway you look at it. I like definition but perhaps not to that degree. All the babies looking good though.

Re: Arnold Swartistaffy
I agree with Lynne the dog is in amazing shape as long as its fit and healthy and not forced too be a certain way then i think he looks great, I have had so many staffords in my family and i love all shapes and sizes but occasionally you do get some that are quite muscular and you don,t have too work at it, My skye is pretty ripped and defined and looks very young for her age and i have done nothing different with her than what i did with my Jez rip, who was alittle sausage on legs
Heres a pic of skye completely relaxed not as defined as dog in picture but he is fully flexed.

The only problem i've found is the fitter you keep your dog, the more they want and it becomes hard work just to tier the buggers out.

Honestly that is why I have a spring pole and run Monte on the bike. Nothing else works except the heat to wear him out! Sent him to all day play- 12 hours of playgroup - and he still had energy. He wore all the other dogs out. Lol.

Wow, that's muscular. I've seen a lot of pics of Staffs on here where they are quite muscular (though not as much as the one in that pic) and wondered if people were getting their dog that way on purpose, or if that's how Staffs are meant to naturally look. To be honest, I prefer the non-muscular look purely because I think it'd give people the wrong impression on an already-misunderstood breed, but at the same time, there's nothing wrong with keeping your dog fit and healthy as long as the methods are fine

I really don't like it. It may be fit, but it's too fit. No animal (including humans) can stay at that level for too long without some sort of health kick-back. It's like a boxer - he'll be fit all the time, but he'll only get super-fit leading up to a fight.

Staffies are muscley though, and although the one pictured is very fit, for a Stafford to look 'non-muscular' it'd either have to be fat or in poor condition and there's no way you should keep your dog fat or in bad condition because you're worried about what people might think if it was in a fit and healthy shape. It's wrong to do it (keep it fat or in poor condition) because you prefer it to look that way too IMO, if you don't like a dog to be muscley then don't have a staffy!

Re: Arnold Swartistaffy
The dogs in top condition and agree with the other post about it looking even more muscular as it's tensed in the picture so won't look the same when relaxed.my old staff was in similar shape to this dog when he was about 3 years old,I used to take him out on the bike and he used to just run along side me which he used to love until he started to be aggressive with other dogs. my dog now is quite muscular now for his age and this is just of chasing his tennis balls.I like the look of the dog as a lot of dogs I see are over weight and un exercised.

Re: Arnold Swartistaffy
Cant see the pics other than on my phone ... but from what I saw, I couldnt see anything wrong
The dog in the first post looked very fit, very lean, and thats it really
Ours is a performance breed (which some seem to forget) and as such, should be very muscular, fit, and not carry any real amount of fat
As long as they are healthy and happy, the leaner the better in my book as long as they are not lean through dehidration or poor feeding etc

Re: Arnold Swartistaffy
Romeo is only 9 months old and when he is relaxed he is a lanky lad, all leg and nothing else, but when he is put under a stress he gets insanely ripped for such a little young fellow.
I chose to resirve judgement onthe owners using the dog for fighting as there is no signs at all that he is being abused.
There is a young woman at my training group with a black staff that is honestly almost as ripped as that one, and they run him and weight pull with him Urho (the dogs name) is like a little body builder

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression, I didn't mean they should be kept unhealthy for the sake of vanity, I just thought it was something that depended on the individual dog, because most Staffs I've seen aren't muscular (not fat either, just something I'd consider to be "normal"). So I figured it was a personal choice that had no real effect on the dog's health. Of course if they only look non-muscular when in poor condition, they shouldn't be kept that way because of appearances.

Re: Arnold Swartistaffy
Good, was worried for a minute there!
The breed standard mentions 'muscular' or 'well muscled' about 5 times so a well bred, fit and healthy Staffy should be.

That's the problem. Yes, they should be muscular, the way a professional athlete is muscular, but not muscle-bound in the way of a body builder. That isn't 'fit'.
