pinch collar for pulling?
Our trainer has mentioned this as an option--Callie is getting better walking on our street, but stiill pulls like crazy in a new or exciting setting. She wants to do a private session with us in a week or two to decide. She thought we might use it in a limited way, for example, just in training sessions in the backyard.
What do you guys think? Would love advice from those of you with more experience. I am going back to basics, stopping and turning when she pulls, always walking her with a treat to keep her interested...she will almost always wait for me when I tell her to, or when I give a quick leash pop and say "ah-ah," but often just runs ahead after we start up again.
FYI our breeder thinks she's still too young to expect that she won't pull, though she has used pinch collars on some of her dogs.

Would not advise a pinch collar at all. They are illegal in England.
Try something like a Halti or Canny collar. These are available from Amazon

I would never use a pinch collar. I've used a head halti for Bella before and it worked really well

Pinch collars aren,t a good idea at all Callie is still young and i am sure with perserverance and good positive training you will get there, i am not against haltis but i would much rather train my dogs not too pull when they are young if thats possible as i know some dogs are just really bad pullers!
I always just stop and make Ava sit when she pulls takes forever but she soon works out we only walk on when she stops pulling x

Unfortunately they're not illegal.
I know a lady that is training her GSD to do schutzhund work & that includes 'man' work - ie she has to go right in and bite at a man's arm & hold on until told to release. The trainer will sometimes use a 'pinch' or 'prong' collar to reinforce the fact that the dog must let go immediately the handler tells it to. However, they never use a prong/pinch collar for heelwork - ever!
And on a puppy? Not on your life! No puppy needs to have such a harsh method of correction used on it. Even older dogs shouldn't have them on unless an extremely experienced trainer is present.

I was just reposting they are available too buy in the UK again like you Caryll i have known them used for army police dog attack release training but do not feel the need for them too be available for general use i think its quite scary what you can buy online for dogs these days

Re: pinch collar for pulling?
I think it's the shock collars that are illegal, but I don't know why these aren't either makes my blood boil

OK, I get it. Definitely not going there for my baby girl. Glad I asked, thank you.

Re: pinch collar for pulling?
In the US SOOOO many people use them for Pit Bulls (and other Bull Breeds). It drives me crazy. I don't understand why anyone would want to use one on their pet!

Re: pinch collar for pulling?
I think they are just a shortcut for lazy people to be honest. People don't like to put the effort and time into training and expect the dog to learn everything too quickly

Re: pinch collar for pulling?
I like gentle leaders or halti. My boys still pull with them and don't particularly like them, but it is the only way my wife can walk them. Sometimes I go back to the regular collar or harness but always feel like I was in a sled race when I get home. Only never use when running them (gentle leader). Also not a fan of shock collars.

to make them look tough. if the dog has a big bad collar it MUST be a bad * dog.
you see it in the horse industry too, people put a certain bit in that sends horses mental because its painful but at the same time they cant move for the pain and the owners say theyre "so mental, i am the only person who can control it"

Re: pinch collar for pulling?
If a dog pulls, you shouldn't even use a flat collar IMO.

A front clipping harness like this - http://www.dog-and-bone.co.uk/shop/leads-and-harnesses/products/haqihana-harness.html#content - would be much better.

Re: pinch collar for pulling?
I would never use anything like this and if a "trainer" suggested it I would stop working with him/her immediately

Re: pinch collar for pulling?
I agree with everyone else, don't even get me started on shock and prong collars! A lazy and cruel way to control your dog IMO. I would be tempted to find another trainer if this so called expert wants you to use one on a pup!
