When to choose a name
I was just wondering when to choose a name for a pup, and how others feel about it.
Maska was the only male in the litter, so we chose his name prior to getting him (it means "strong one" in Navejo Indian). It was well suited in more ways than one, but besides the physical appearance of Staffs, he also has a quiet strong personality.
With Loki we waited a while, and changed her name a few times. We like names with meaning, but the names we chose didn't really fit her personality. So, after she came home with us, we finally decided on Loki (god of mischief, among many of the meanings), and it is really apt. If you can't find her, or if she is out of sight and it goes quiet, we KNOW she is up to no good

Re: When to choose a name
I've always had the names picked out before the dog. I like the first letter of the name to corresspond with the breed.

Mine where already named but got shortened/changed, and well it doesn't have a lot of meaning!

Re: When to choose a name
I think that's a lovely way to name a dog!
I usually have a couple of names I like before the pup comes home, but once it's home I tend to end up with a completely different one!

Re: When to choose a name
I had names picked out before I brought them home. My daughter chose Millie because she loves Millie's Cookies. Bella's full name is Bellatrix, from harry potter. I found out after I named her that her mum's name is Bella as well

Re: When to choose a name
I've always chosen the name after getting the dog. I was actually gonna call my puppy Thor (I know...lol), but after seeing him for just a few minutes, I decided Loki would be a better fit. Obviously you can pick a name you like beforehand, but you'll never know if it suits the dog til you see the dog and spend time with it.

Re: When to choose a name
Skye had lots of names but after we picked her up we just used the one that suited
Buster was originally named boss but again after bringing him home I wanted to give him a new name and again it just seemed to suit him

Re: When to choose a name
All the pups from our litter had little names from the Breeder before they were chosen and different coloured collars to identify them more easily, as they were chosen they were named by the new owners and Andy and Linzi called them by these name to so they would be familiar. Tommy's name was picked before we went to view and in honour of my OH Grandad who is sadly not with us any more (Mr Cooper )

Re: When to choose a name
Day after I got him, he had no name so I picked bullseye (Oliver twist EBT) but shortened it to bulley because he soon started bullying the dogs in our street

Re: When to choose a name
Most of my dogs already came with names as they were rescues or rehomes.
Henry was named J.B. when I got him but I didnt like it so changed it. I almost named him Diesel but the name Henry just popped into my head and stuck - plus he didnt respond to Diesel but when I said the name Henry out load he automatically piped up and came to me so that was that .
I like names with meaning so when I got my beardie x from the pound I named her Zoe which means 'life' because if I hadnt adopted her that morning she would have been put to sleep a few hours later.

Re: When to choose a name
Me and my other half wanted a male staffy because we want to be able to introduce him to her mum and dads two boys and presumed that taking a female over there house might cause them to play up as men do around women trying to be bravado.
so we had the sex we wanted we could choose names which was going be between either Dave or Gary but ew went for Gary, we asked the breeder if she could start calling him gary if possible so he would learn his name abit faster which she was more than happy to do. he got a little paper blue color on him. out of the whole littter of 8 we was the only ones to name him before we had him

Re: When to choose a name
Bit of both really. Nice to have a couple of names thought of beforehand, then pick which one suits the pup best. I think it just comes down to personal preference!

We had a few names picked out before we got Gwen! But on the 6 hour car ride back from picking her up we decided on Gwen and it just fit!
