look for signs before he makes a mess (might take one or two more messes before you realise, a whimper, a dissapearing act...)
is he doing it while you are away during the day? or just whenever?
also, if he goes while on a walk, loads of praise, and when he goes in the garden. (i had to do it with Lola when i moved house the first time round at about 3 months) <<this worked for me, i'm not saying its the right thing or will work for everyone, but worth a shot maybe

He do do it when we are there as he makes us aware and goes to the door, its when we go to bed, we wake up and hes left up a mess to clean up, tonight we popped out for 20 mins and got back and he had pooped on the floor in the hallway altough he had already been out! but yeah there must be somthing im missing cheers

No Caryll, my Partner takes him out about 9 ish , when i get home from work he will go on his big walk usually for about 1 and a half hours over our local nature reserve thats about 3ish then he has his last feed about 5 and i walk him around the block about 8ish. but he is still let out after each feed.

I had a similar problem with Dempsey, so I changed my routine slightly. He gets his first walk at about 8 - 9 am, followed by breakfast about an hour after the walk, then another big walk at around 3pm, followed by his evening meal at about 5pm. Then I wait until just before I go to bed & take him for a 20-30 minute walk to do his business before bed. That seemed to help & he's been ok overnight ever since.

I honestly don't think he is being let out enough. He can't hold it all day he is only a puppy still.

Also included in the praise, give them a treat and use your key word for "toilet", so they associated the word toilet with actually going to the toilet and getting a treatasa-james wrote:

It doesn't sound like he's getting taken out to the toilet enough to me either.
What do you clean the mess up with?

What do you clean the mess up with?
Could be the smell is left over and attracting him to the spot

That's what I was thinking. To the OP, you need to use a biological washing powder or a cleaner designed for pet messes with enzymes in to break down the smell.
