looking for a dog.
hello there main page! i've already posted in the new comers forum, thanks for all the help there guys! i thought id post here too, cant hurt! (not really ever been in a forum before, hope my forum etiquette is not letting me down)
I've looked after a staffy type dog for a while now, this dog has grown on me, they literally are the best dogs, I cant take other breeds seriously after walking/working this dog. So now I want to get one, just like her. Im pretty sure shes an amstaff, which as we ALL know are banned here in the uk. so some advice. I'd love it if she wasn't amstaff than id have a chance of getting one similar, id drive anywhere in the country for one like her.. please knowledgeable people, look at my pictures what is she? have you seen any like her? i must have spent 10 hours looking thru the internet, most are your typical short little staffs. There are staffs her size, but they are clearly bread with labs/ridgebacks and other larger dogs and end up looking like those dogs. Missy, im sure has no lab/ridgeback or any other large dog in her, yet she'S twice the size of other staffs..... is there a long legged type staff i haven't come across? or is she an amstaff in which case i should give up looking? any advice would be greatly appreciated and thankfully received.

Re: looking for a dog.
She is adorable but definately not an AmStaff. Looks like a Staffy cross with either a bulldog or more likely a lab

Re: looking for a dog.
She looks like a cross to me, although I dont know what with. She has a staffy face, but the body looks wrong.
I know someone who has a staffy cross boxer (it is Buster's favourite paymate) and he is only slightly taller than Buster and his body doesnt look the same as that, although I know crosses can all look different.
Yes, you have to pay from a rescue, although how much varies for different places. They will also do a homecheck and make sure you and the dog are suited. Deffinatly worth a try

The only way you are going to get the dog you want if you don't want a typical staffy is to go to the rescue and find one that suits you (adult dog) otherwise you may end up being dissapointed. Though I personally guarantee if you get any dog with a good temperament check , if it's crossed with a staffy and has staffy traits you will not want to change it , even if it turns out to be a dwarf, they are a very loyal and rewarding breed.
Regarding payment , yes , from a rescue they will be checked by the vet, temeprament tested and normally as long as they are old enough then neutered if appropriate. You will be checked out by the rescue, home checked and if successful would normally be asked for a donation towardd the upkeep of the dog (around 100 - 150 pounds I think depending on the shelter.
Something else you may want to think about is they are always crying out for fosterers and volunteer dog walkers , this would give you a chance to judge if a particular dog was suitable in your environment without full commitment and dissapointment from either you or the dog, just a thought

Go for it
If you are looking in my area Battersea at old Windsor is stuffed to the brim with Staffys also. Guildford is great because they foster them at home where as Battersea has kennels.
Both fabulous organisations. Good luck Xx

Honestly, she isn't an AmStaff.

But these 'typical short little staffs' are what staffords should look like. Anything else is a cross breed. Sure, you can get larger or smaller staffs, but to get one the size of Missy, it will have had to be crossed with something.
Seriously, your best bet is to trawl through rescue centres until you fins a larger staff cross that suits you.

Re: looking for a dog.
I know of a staffy cross great dane who looks similar to the dog pictured...I'm with those saying your best bet is to go down the rescue route.
Slightly concerned about your question of whether you'll have to pay - I may be reading it wrong but if you can't afford to pay a rehoming fee then I'd be concerned you wouldn't be able to afford to care for a dog. They can cost you an arm and a leg!

Good luck in finding your new friend
Our Skye is full staff and is 17 inch to the shoulder but her mum and sister were big girls so we knew what we were getting although she's not as tall as some I've seen

Re: looking for a dog.
What a shame, never mind dont give up just yet.
I'm sure your dog is out there somewhere. Perhaps try to go and have a look at a few and take them for a little walk in the rescue centre, see which dog chooses you.
Rocky chose us, my hubby and me were not even seriously looking for a dog but ended up at Woodgreen shelter, Rocky just stood at the fencing and looked at us and that was it. I think we all fell in love with each other straight away.
