L-2HGA
I have just received Molly's papers from the kennel club and have realised that her mum is a carrier. Can someone explain to me exactly what that means? I have done the usual searches but always value owners advise and experiences.
Thanks

I don't understand , I thought for the breeder to register the puppies with KC then the parents had to be clear ???

Genetics problems are generally carried by two genes - one from the mother & the other from the father. You need two genes the same to produce a pup that will be 'affected' by the genetic disorder. If you mate two clear dogs you'll get all clear pups. If you mate a clear with a carrier, you can get half clear & half carrier (or any mix thereof) but you won't get an affected pup. If you mate two carriers you may be lucky to get all carriers, but you have just as much chance of getting affected pups. If you mate an affected dog to any other you are likely to get affected pups.
So, if your pup's mum was mated to a 'clear' dog then the pups will either be clear or carrier. But the 'carrier' will not become an 'affected' dog.

You can mate a clear to a carrier and have no problems at all. As long as any pups are then also tested to find out their status before mating you're ok.
Where genetics (DNA) tests are available, and carried out, the kennel club can refuse to register pups from two affected or carrier dogs.

So are you now planning to breed ??
No we got Molly as a pet and have no interest in breeding. She will be spayed when the time is right which is another question!! I have been told after her first season, then today I was told to wait till she is 18 months as she will be more mature?
