SKA project shared By South Africa and Australia.
Was announced yesterday that SA and Australia to share the award for the SKA(Square Kilometre arrray) (bids have been 9 years in the making) 70%/30% with low frequency portion hosted in Aus and the bulk of the radio telescope to be constructed in North Cape SA. Great Scientific acheivement for both countries.

Personally I think it's a criminal waste of money. It would be better used to relieve human suffering the world over.
Just my opinion.

An exciting project, but without such advances in science we would still be sitting in caves! Yes it will cost a lot, but maybe the governments of the world should stop investing billions in their defence forces and the arms industries first. How many billions of our taxes have gone to Iraq and Afghanistan and will continue to do so for a very long time.

I'm sorry, but exactly what advances will this produce?

So, because a lot of countries are investing in this it's ok for the money to be spent? If they can afford to throw this sort of maney away, why can't they spend the money to improve defence (as you say, Steve) or living condition etc?

I just cant see a problem with it... it very unlikely the UK will be putting a great amount in it. it will also create job all around the world which surely a good thing at the moment

In the grand scale of things it will create very few jobs, and the ones it does create will be very specialised. I just can't see what good it's going to do anybody other than searching for things we don't need to know.

it's going take 50 plus year to do we wont even see it finish, it will help with a lot of thing like huge comet heading toward earth. it will crate job for all the countries or keep companies going for good few years.

How's that going to help? We won't be able to stop it, it'll just create widespread panic!
Sorry, I just can't believe that it's needed. It's technology for technology's sake.

in 50 odds years I'm sure there be way of blowing up comets. imo it be a useful tool for future generations.
Re: SKA project shared By South Africa and Australia.
In 50 years their knowledge will be the same as now - apart from one or two useless bits of info. They won't have a clue how to deal with comets or any other far flun disaster. It's just a complete & criminal waste of money.
I know you don't agree, but I just can't accept it's necessary.
