Zack has the best temperament I have seen on any dog. But he is over 50Kg. He walks off lead and was amazing watching peoples faces change as they seen a 50kg plus dog walking towards them off lead lol

Yep, German Shepherd Dog. Used to be German Shepherd Dog (Alsatian), but recently the Kennel Club dropped the 'Alsatian' bit - at last!

What was the difference? I have had loads and still don't know. The only difference I have noticed was years ago GSD's had sloping back legs that always caused them problems when they got old and you had to have them PTS as their legs would always give way. Then I thought the alsatian was breed which had what we see today.....the square back legs which hold up better when the dog is older

They're the same breed. No difference, it's just a name.

During the war people started calling them Alsatian Wolf Dogs because of the anti-german feelings at the time (Deutsche Schafferhund = German Shepherd). Then they dropped the Wolf Dog bit. After a while they decided that they could go back to the German Shepherd name, but insisted on adding (Alsatian) to it. Now, they've dropped it. There's only the one breed, though.

Arrrr right cos I could never tell what the difference was and the back legs changing over the last 30 years to a squarer shape was the only thing I could think of. Cheers Caryll. I've learn't something new today thumbs up

The back legs have only really changed in 2 ways - 1, K.C Registered GSD's mostly have their hips x-ray'd & 'scored' before they are bred from, the lower the score the better, and so they are, generally stronger than they were 20 or 30 years ago (Hip Dysplasia is still a problem though). 2, the show 'stand' isn't quite as exagerrated as it used to be, so they don't look quite so bent, if you see what I mean.

How old is your mum's dog? He looks like a long haired GSD. Lovely looking fella!

He's 7 and the biggest GSD I've seen. Doesn't look that big on the photo but it was like walking a small donkey Laughing

He is a beauty....
and you will not beleive me when i say this BUT....... my Dad's champion GSD was 67kg... and I am not shitting you...
His paws were as big as dinner plates... if I can find an old pic of him I will scan it and show you... he was beautiful in everyway.
I would have to say GSD are still my FAV looking dog... but I love the Staffy for their personality... I cant go past a Black and tan with a nice full saddle... hmmmmmmm..
and Long hair you dont see much over here...
We had 2 long hair in the mix of 23. Hard work at times with their coats here in Australia being so hot.

your mum is very lucky.. he looks like a champ
x

Whites aren't all that rare nowadays, there are several breeders who are breeding purely for white or blue in GSD's. Shame, because most of them are really poor quality, with poor health issues. Sad

I thinks thats why she stopped breeding because she could not find suitable studs for her females.
