Sun-block? Empty Sun-block?

Post by Deebee Tue May 22 2012, 16:49

Hi everyone.

Have seen a gorgeous white Staff in the rescue home. Apparently he can live with other dogs so we're really interested in him. Someone told me that because he is white we'd need to watch him in the sun and put sun-block on him. I was just wondering if you use the same sun-block that humans use and do you apply it all over them?

we put sun block on our white cats ears , just normal human stuff. Maybe go into Boots and see if they have one for sensitive skin ??

I use some great sun block on my two from Epi-pet. It is safe for animals and can be sprayed on.

over here in Australia our vet recommended Hamilton's sun screen for Winston's nose ( it is a human one ) Best to go with the baby one or ones for sensitive skins.

Thanks very much for the info Smile

Can I also ask if White Staffs have more health problems? I've had Boxers for years and the white ones have so many health problems, is it the same with Staffs?

They can tend to have more sensitive skin, but so far my two whities aren't any better or worse than my red one. They can be more prone though I believe.

My ambull chance is pure white but i don't put sun cream on him, i do keep a closer eye of him as he tends to overheat rather quickly.

We put Baby Factor 50 cream on Heston, he doesn't put up with us suncreaming any more than his ears and muzzle, so we have just ordered him a UV Rash Vest for dogs!!! Watch out for the human spray suncreams as some contain alchohol to help them absorb quicker, which can dry out sensitive skin......go for things suitable for babies x

Try Epi-pet. Spray on without the bad alcohol. Pricy, but it's safe.

I've never used sunscreen on my dog before. We don't take her out for very long in the hot part of the day though.

I use suncream on Buster, but only on his nose and ears where the fur is thinner - also on his belly, but only if I know he is going to be out for a long time sunbathing. I use my childrens suncream on him. I also use it on LuLu's pink bits. Chinese crested's very often have sensitive skin as they have no fur to protect it and she has never had any problems using normal childrens suncreams Smile

I have bought some children's factor 50 for Taz for the times when its hot, although I don't tend to let her out in the peak times for too long as she heats up so quick Smile

Not really, other than a slightly sensitive skin perhaps, and in some cases deafness. But the deafness would be there from birth, so if it isn't deaf now (apart from the staffy selective deafness that they all seem to suffer from when there's something more interesting for them to do than come to you!), you'll be ok! Big Grin
