After three months of staying at home doing not much I got myself in an agreement with work and will go back next week. I love my wife and kids but it really started to get boring

question to the masses, what's the longest have you been out of work and what did you do to keep sharp? also, could you work with your other half?

Nosey lol Smile

I haven't been out of work for longer than a month since I was 17, but thats when I moved out of home. Had on/off jobs but got my own place at 24 and haven't any option now to be out of work. Be it not the job of my dreams!

And no I couldn't work with a partener, they would do my head in lol!

Whats your story behind the question?? XX

I was 'out of work' for 9 years - but that was because I had the children. It drove me insane by the end of it & I had to get a job - almost any job would do. I ended up taking a job in a small DIY shop behind the till. Then my present job came up & I jumped at it - a chance to stretch my brain a bit and work near enough by myself. I love it.

I used to work with my oh - it was a courier company. I have to say that it caused problems - not serious ones, but little niggly ones.

I haven't been out of work since i was 15 but to be fair i haven't had a full time job either. I've been part time working and going to school. This is my very last year though and i will be actively looking for a full time job as of next month Sad

I only ask as I'm not very keen on my job and while at home between contracts loads of ideas have been suggested, some of which involve working with my wife. I don't want to badmouth her at all but I couldn't think of anything worse Surprised

I think I'm going through a midlife crisis Big Grin Laughing

Nope, I've worked full time since I was 18, I had a Saturday job since I was 14, waitressing at local hotel!!

In my opinion having a job is the done thing, unless of course your taking a break for children or can afford not to work lol!

Working with the oh can work as long as you keep your working life seperate from your private life. It isn't easy, though!

I have to admit that I was glad when he decided to give up on the courier business & get a job! Big Grin

Jobs a job at the moment, honestly I don't mind mine, but rather dull compared to what I used to do.

I look at it as I'm lucky to have one. You'll be fine its always daunting going back after a significant amount of time off Smile

Look around for something else, always easier to find a job whilst your in one, and never hurts to look, thanks to advice from guys here!! Smile

@ Karen, affording not to work would be nice. my wife stayed at home a few years looking after my little ones and that's a very demanding job in itself.... to be fair I couldn't do it.

I was forced into a break from work and thought I was going to use the time to find out the "meaningfull job I allways wanted" to do but I'm returning to my old industry as watching daytime telly or walking dogs while waiting for great ideas won't pay the bills.

I feel defeated angry

Sorry it wasn't meant to be rude, I can understand some people do find themselves out of work through no fault of their own and I also completely understand being a parent is a full time job.

Sorry might have came out a bit blunt but if you have family like mine you'd understand...

Don't give up, believe me I have been there myself. I was sacked after 6 years and had to take my ex employer to court, which I won, but made finding another job very hard, but I did, it may not be my ideal job and only a couple of months ago I thought I would be made redundant from it.

Keep thinking on it! I find that thinking while doing other things is the best way to come up with good ideas. I wouldn't know any other way though as I have been working since about 16. I wouldn't mind my wife working for me, but I know she would hate it!

I've been working in some shape or form since I was 8. That was mostly a summer job helping the lifeguards on the beach and helping fix the equipment on the weekend. The longest I've been without a job is a month and that was right after college because I needed a break.

I've worked with my OH before and still do now. It's her business and I just help out and give advice sometimes so we don't have any problems. I think it depends on the personalities involved as well as the work itself. If you have doubts about it working out I would avoid it.
